Silver half vintem (10 reis) of Joao III of Portugal (1502-1557) minted between 1538 and 1557. The combination of obverse (four small shields in a cruciform pattern surrounding a central shield) and the reverse (a cross fleuretty) and the first four letters of the name IOAN[...] appear on the coins of John III of Portugal. Although the same designs of obverse and reverse appear on the coins of his predecessor, John II of Portugal, John II's name appears spelt as IOHANNES, whereas John III's name appears as IOANES, which appears to match the legend on this coin.
