Early bronze age straight-sided thin-butted flat axe. In v. good condition Note - Peter Reavill - 18/5/21. Thanks are extended to Dr Brendan O'Connor who has suggested that this axe form is now better understood after the recent publication of Stuart Needham 2017: The Classification of Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age Copper and Bronze Axe-head from Souther Britain. This axehead appears as Cat No:18 in Needham's above classification and is ascribed to Needham Class 2D Type Halberton dating to the period 1: 2450-2325 BC

Solid cast flat axe with the remains of thick green patina unfortunately badly pitted. The axe has a fairly broad butt, the sides expand evenly to towards the cutting edge where it rounds out slightly forming a half oval cutting edge. The central section of the axe forms a thin pointed oval in section, and both ends converge to a point in profile. The axe is of the type cast in one piece and then hammered and annealed. The butt end is 36.86mm wide, the cutting edge end is 74.95mm wide. Very similar to the axe from Hardingham Norfolk now in the Norwich Castle Museum

Bronze flat axe, unworn and in very fresh condition. It is pointed oval in its longitudinal section tapering from the centre to either end, and curving a little more towards the relatively wide and splayed cutting edge creating a very slight ridge c.22mm before it. The butt-end tapers to a thin but blunt edge. The cutting edge has suffered very minor damage and is still relatively sharp, with slight recent damage on one side. The sides of the axe are evenly curved and concave, flaring at the cutting end so that the blade curves slightly upwards at each corner, and tapering towards the …

Copper or copper-alloy object which is probably a miniature flat axehead. Sub-triangular in form, with damaged crescentic blade edge and concave sides, it has a narrow (although incomplete) butt, and a very thin section with no trace of bevels or flanges. It has small amounts of surface corrosion, but otherwise a medium and dark green patina. The side, butt and blade are extensively chipped and damaged, largely as a result of corrosion. Scratches on the main faces may be relatively recent, although as they are still filled with soil it is hard to tell. Length 50 mm, width of blade …

Early Bronze Age Flat Axe - probably Class 3. Dimensions: blade width 57mm, surviving length 86mm, maximum thickness 9.5mm, weight 211.3 grams. This axe has slightly concave sides, which diverge gently towards an expanded blade end. The butt of the axe has been broken off in antiquity. There is some evidence that the axe was deliberately damaged; the profile has been slightly bent at the butt end, implying considerable force, and there are linear marks on both butt end surfaces aligned at right angles to the axis of the blade. These would appear to be deliberate blows from a na…

The striking thing about the axe is that it is particularly small, even though it appears to be complete. Also the axe has been over-cleaned therefore any detail such as hammer marks or even a possible flange are not visible. The blades' tip, and cutting edge is slightly asymmetrical , but whether this is due to wear or cleaning is uncertain. The blade tapers towards the butt of the axe. The butt is slightly curved. The surface of the axe is pitted and only has a small element of the patina remaining.

A cast bronze broken blade fragment of a flat or palstave axehead (length: 26.1mm, width: 37.1mm; thickness: 7.3mm; weight: 24.32g). Most of the blade tip and cutting edge remains and does not curve round at the edges. One of the blade sides is intact until the break, but most of the blade side opposite has been broken at a slant down to near the blade tip. The artefact is in a worn but fair condition with only small traces of the original patina surviving. The surface of the axehead fragment is dark grey in colour. The bronze blade end of a small flat axe, measuring 41.7mm in blade width, 34.4mm in surviving length and 8.9mm in thickness. The blade is possibly low flanged but is too worn and fragmentary to be sure, the edges in particular are severly pocked due to invasive corrosion. It has a splayed convex cutting edge. The patination is medium green. This form of small axe with an expanded cutting edge is typical of Arreton form axes, which usually have slight flanges, of the end of the early Bronze Age, circa 1600BC.

A copper or copper-alloy (bronze) axe of early Bronze Age (possibly Beaker period) date. The object is a flat axe of simple form. It has a rounded blade measuring 37.3mm wide by 2.2mm thick. The width of the axe tapers gradually from the blade to 11.2mm at the squared-off proximal (attachment) end. The maximum thickness of the object is towards the centre where it measures 4.3mm. Both surfaces are slightly convex. There are no flanges, stop ridges, or evidence of any joints and is is probable that the axe was made using a one piece mould. The artefact has a high metallic content and would have been made in an open mould (possibly of sandstone), therefore explaining why the surface is no uneven and slightly pitted. It is severely pock scarred with the higher surfaces being darkish green in colour and the lower surfaces generally light green due to flaking and/or pocking. There are possible tiny patches of the original surface on the haft end. This badly corroded and slightly broken axe has a splayed blade which is irregular and off-centre (without flanges). There is a possibly that the axe was not finished as the blade edge does not appear to have been sharpened, but it is difficult to tell as the surface of the axe is pitted and only fragments of the original surface/ patina survive. Large, heavy copper-alloy flat axe with straight sides and butt and gently curved crescent-shaped blade. The axe is about 12mm thick and narrows towards butt-end and blade. Though heavily corroded, the axe appears undamaged. It seems that this flat axe is one of the earliest British metal artefacts. The copper content is unusually high for an Early Bronze Age and the shape of the axe dates it to the Castletown Roche tradition - the earliest in Great Britain (Schmidt, P.K. and Burgess, C. 1981, no. 3).

The axe is made from cast copper. The nature of the corrosion, with blue patches and analysis of past flat axes suggest the material is more likely to be copper rather than copper alloy. The axe is complete, but the surface has been heavily abraded, therefore only traces of a heavy green/brown patina. In plan the axe is a sub elongated triangle. The butt is rounded, and in profile gradually tapers to a rounded edge. The sides are straight with no flaring outwards of the blade tip. The blade cutting edge appears to have been sharpened, suggesting the axe was functional rather than v…

The axe is made from cast copper alloy. The axe is complete, but the surface has been heavily abraded and is pitted, therefore there is only one patch of a heavy brown patina. In plan the axe is a sub elongated trapezoid with a rounded butt and flared blade. The butt is rounded, and in profile tapers to a rounded edge. The edges of the septum and body are slightly raised, forming a slight flange. The blade flares outwards, but the blade tips are abraded and therefore rounded. The cutting edge is slightly asymmetrical which may be due to wear rather than abrasion. In profile the bl…

Copper alloy flat axehead dating to the Early Bronze Age. It belongs to the phase I classification of types (c. 2500 – 1450 B.C.) in Savoury’s Guide Catalogue of the Bronze Age Collections of the National Museum of Wales and appears to be of Migdale tradition. It is not one of the earliest types of axe due to the flared blade and central thickening, which were improvements on the earliest types. The convex blade is splayed on either side by roughly 10mm and the butt is slightly rounded. Across the axehead run concentric ridges mimicking the shape of the blade. The cutting e…

A copper-alloy flat axe of the early Bronze Age similar in shape to a class 2 axe. The body flares evenly to the blade end of the object. The blade flares out from the body with an even curviture to the edge. The edge remains fairly sharp, though an imperfection in the metal has left a small semicircular divet in the center of the edge. At the points of the blade, the width of the axe is 60mm. The haft end is roughly squared, and it is difficult to tell whether this is the original butt or if butt broke off the object, the broken edges then smoothed slightly. The butt measu…

A fragment of a copper alloy, Early Bronze Age, flat axe, probably of the Migdale type, dating from 2150-1500BC. Approximately one third of the axehead is represented by this piece. The thinned blade edge survives and flares out at each side. Before the broken edge, there are slight flanges on the edges of the axehead. It has been suggested that Bronze Age axes were sometimes sacrificially killed (cut into pieces). The fragment is 32.4mm long,, 36.2mm wide and 8.8mm thick. It weighs 33.41gm.

Early Bronze Age flat axe, made from cast cu-alloy. As far as can be determined from the picture, the axe is plain on both sides, has a narrow butt and a widely splayed cutting edge. If there are signs of wear or re-sharpening marks, we cannot see them on the images; they may be very faint. This axe is part of the Brithdir metalwork assemblage and dates from ca. 2150-2000BC Unfortunately, we do not have any measurements for the axe, but many thanks to the finder for supplying the images attached to this entry.

A complete cast bronze flat axehead, dating to the Early Bronze Age between 2100 - 1500 BC (length: 94mm; width at butt: 34mm; width at blade tip: 63mm; thickness in the centre: 9mm; weight: ). The axehead has a lenticular profile with a convex section/ thickness at the sides. The parallel sides are particularly straight, although they expand outwrds with a protruding blade tip to either side. Although most of the original cutting edge survives, the probable blade facets are not particularly noticeable. the artefact is in a worn but fair condition with a light green patina.

A bronze flat axe of the late Early Bronze Age. It is complete and is a low-flanged axe of Arreton type. There is severe surface pocking due to invasive corrosion, especially on one face and side. Small amounts of deep brown patinated original surface survive, but the axe is mostly a pale to medium green. There is no trace of a central bevel or stop ridge, although a bevel divides the blade end from the axe body. The butt end is gently convex. A few recent plough grazes are present on the surface. The axe is 86mm in length, 46mm at the blade, and is 9mm thick. It weighs 98g.

Early Bronze Age flat axehead. Cast copper alloy or, more likely, copper. In plan the axe is sub-triangular and in profile the axe expands very gradually and slightly towards the middle. Undecorated, and with no side flanges or stop bevel. The butt end is rounded, and the sides are flat and very slightly concave. The tips of the curved blade are slightly damaged, and the edge bevel & cutting edge do not survive. There is a shallow scratch on one surface, starting as a notch close to the left hand corner of the blade, and running roughly one third of the way up the axe - this damage was…

A complete Early Bronze Age cast cu-alloy flat axe. The body of the axe flares out into a crescent-shaped blade and the butt also curves slightly. The axe has a smooth surface with a large pitted area on one face and a decoration of ca. 15 horizontal lines of short grooves on each side. Its casting seams were flattened and polished it is generally in good condition, with a rich greenish-brown patina. The body thickens in the middle so that the shaft sides have an elongated, rounded diamond shape. It does not have stop-ridge or side flanges which makes it part of the Migdale-Marnoch met…

Incomplete developed flat axe with cast (?) flanges of later Early Bronze Age date (c. 2000 – 1700 BC). Although incomplete the classification of the axe matches the descriptions and illustrations of the axe type Arreton which is dated to Early Bronze Age III, of metalworking stage V, which corresponds to Needham’s (1996) Period 3 circa 2000 – 1700 BC. The axehead is broadly sub rectangular in plan with a splayed crescent shaped blade. In profile it is broadly lentoid, with slight tapering edges. There is a large horizontal break toward the butt of the axehead and approximate…

Early Bronze Age (or Metal-Using Neolithic) copper flat axe, falling within Needham et al.'s (forthcoming) Class 2D, Type Halberton, or probably of Type Growtown / Milton Moss (following Schmidt and Burgess 1981). The axe is near-complete with only a little damage to the edges and has a length of 98.55mm and weighs 325.1g. The butt has suffered a little damage making the type identification difficult and slightly speculative, but appears to have been straight with a surviving width of 32.9mm and a thickness of 4.5mm. Cast copper alloy flat axe which thickens towards the middle, with a thin, narrow and originally probably slightly rounded butt and a splayed blade. The edges of both the butt and the blade are damaged, and one face in particular is heavily corroded. Two distinct casting flaws are visible on the relatively uncorroded face of the axe. The sides of the blade more or less evenly curve outwards towards the cutting edge from a point situated slightly over one third of the length of the axe from the butt. The axe is undecorated. Longitudinal stritations visible on the relatively uncorro…
