Fragment of a copper alloy axe, probably a palstave, of bronze age date c1400-950BC.  Only the cutting blade end survives, therefore its original form is uncertain and the possibility that it is a flat axehead or a short flanged axehead cannot entirely be ruled out. The upturned tips of the blade are reminiscent of Arreton/Bandon flagged axes of EBA III to MBA I (Peter Revill pers comm).  The fragment is broadly sub rectangular in plan with a wide, crescent shaped blade.  The cutting edge appears to be bevelled over two phases, suggesting that it has been sharpened.&…

The object is broken around the raised stop ridge, just before the narrow blade, which flares out slightly.  The cutting edge of the blade is missing.  Just below the stop ridge is traces of shield shaped decoration. Ed Caswell notes that this could be either secondary or transitional phase (1400-1150 BC) since the blade is quite narrow, but it is difficult to be certain without the haft. The upper terminal is broken, it is slightly waisted at the upper terminal with rounded edges. Peter Reavill (per comms) suggests "The section is flat and similar to that of a flat axe rather than sword or arrow. It may also possibly be an early blade fragment that could be reused to form an arrow." The object has a very pitted and worn dark green coloured patina. The object measures 65.35 mm in lengt…

Cast copper alloy ring of unknown date - based on condition and form it is most probably of later prehistoric Late Bronze Age or Iron Age date (1000 BC - 50 AD), however there is some possibility that it may date from the Roman period (50 - 410 AD). The ring is complete and is circular in plan and sub-oval (D shaped) in cross section with a distinct internal flat edge. At one point there is a distinct internal wear facet, most probably from where it has been used to either suspend from a strap as some form of simple union. A complete bronze ribbed socketed axe with a very square shaped mouth and relatively straight sides which expand near the base of the socket. The sides flare to form a slightly expanded blade edge. The mouth of the axe is sub-rectangular in cross-section; it has been unevenly shaped with the edges of the mouth being heavily trimmed to remove the four casting runners / casting jets - only ones of these is clearly present as a slight square shaped projection. Record ID: HESH-B617D3
Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete cast bronze (copper alloy) socketed axe of Late Bronze Age date (1000 - 750 BC). The axe is incomplete; it is missing the mouth and upper part of the socket including the loop and is broken below the mid-point. Due to the damage classification is difficult. It is likely that this axe fits within the socketed and faceted axe typology probably associated with the Wilburton metalworking traditions (phase X) and earlier phases of the Ewart Park tradition (phase XII). This corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 6-7 circa 1000-750 CAL. BC. The axe is broadly sub-rectangular…

A cast copper alloy (bronze) looped transitional type palstave of later Middle or Late Bronze Age date (1150-1000 BC) - most probably associated with the Penard phase (Needham Period 5) although they are also known from the early Wilburton phases (Needham Period 6) - both assemblages fit within Burgess Metal Working Stage X - sometimes also known as Middle Bronze Age III. The palstave is broadly rectangular in plan with relatively straight parallel side which flare on the lower blade and expand to form a shallow crescentic cutting edge. In profile the palstave is lentoid with the w…
