TREASURE CASE 2016 T662. A distorted annular gold hoop of Bronze Age or Iron Age date. The hoop is formed of cylindrical band of sheet metal that is flat in cross section and with no joins apparent. The band has been folded longitudinally to create a central ridge but the whole object is now bent and distorted. There is no decoration on either side of the band. This object is similar to a so-called' dorsal muff' from an Iron Age torc (see NMS-C6DFC1 / 2007 T119 for comparison), but it may also an ornament (such as a hiar or dress accessory) of Middle to Late Bronze Age date ho…

TREASURE CASE 2016 T521: An incomplete and folded gold strip, now in two pieces, possibly an item of personal adornment of a mount for an object. Punched dots decorated the edges of the tapered terminal end, with three circular piercings arranged 2 - 1 within the triangular terminal head. The opposing terminal is not visible but may be within the larger folded section. Measurements represent the item in its current, folded state: Section 1 (terminal): Folded nearly in half: 41.75mm long, 17.14mm at widest point, tapering to 3.8mm wide at terminal end. 1.2 grams. Section 2 (main section…

TREASURE CASE 2015 T460 Description: A fragment of gold foil, incomplete, bent and with a corregated appearance. No decoration visible. Possibly originally oval in plan. There is a hole through the sheet near to the outer egde, but it is unclear if this is purposeful or not and at what period this occured. There is a small tab visible on one of the folds but this may just be due to the folded condition of the object, however both this possible tab and the hole are features seen on some Early Bronze Age 'basket' ornaments, often interpreted as earrings or hair decorations. They are a…

A probable Middle Bronze Age (c.1500-1100 BC) solid gold bead of annular form and biconical profile with a central perforation measuring 2.9mm in diameter. It is max.7.6mm in diameter at the centre, narrowing to c.5mm diameter at either end, both of which show areas of damage. The bead stands 5.3mm in height and weighs 1.91g. The bead is of similar form to several of sheet gold reported through the Treasure Act, namely HAMP-72E451 (2011 T526),GLO-46CA05 (2014 T358) and NMS-AEC678 (2013 T20), for the latter of which is written 'The gold bead is likely to date to the Middle Bronze A…

Slender leaf-shaped gold strip, the ends folded over to form a distorted ring. Both ends are pierced; the two holes were executed from opposite sides of the strip. While one end is intact and tongue-shaped, the other is squared off and may retain the very slight trace of an original piercing or other feature. It is possible that this end was broken, re-pierced and roughly fettled. The hole at this end is blocked with soil. Length 19.8mm; maximum width of strip 13.9mm; thickness 0.9mm; weight 2.17 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the pierced me…

A fragment of gold, possibly from a bracelet or torc surviving as an undecorated oval/ellipse shaped band that tapers to the shoulders of probable terminals that may have been broken (the breaks are not conclusive). The terminals appear to have been twisted prior to the purported breaks (possibly in the process of breaking them). The band has several bends and distortions and it is not clear what the original profile of the band would have been. There are a number of scuffs and striations to both surfaces. Possible small hammer markings can be seen, particularly on one side of the ban…

A Copper Age (Chalcolithic) gold 'basket ornament', possibly a hair ornament or ear ring, cut from thin gold sheet into an elongated oval shape extending into a narrow tang. The piece has been flattened out and is crinkled both horizontally and vertically. The oval plate is delineated by two concentric grooves following the edge, and two grooves running the length of the tang. The space within the oval plate is filled by four zones of grooves running perpendicular to the long edges and bounded by the inner concentric groove, giving four filled and three plain zones symmetrically place…

The neckring is made from a heavy, thick bar of oval cross-section, which is thickest in the middle and tapers towards both ends. The terminals are finished off as flat oval surfaces. The object appears to have had a good surface finish prior to damage and it has been left entirely plain. The original curvature of the ornament has been distorted asymmetrically so that one arm is more extended than the other. The middle of the bar bears deep >cuts= across both faces apparently having been formed by ancient chisel strikes. Dimensions and metal content: Maximum dimension (distorted) 20…
