Late Bronze Age (c1150 to c800 BC) gold penannular ring (or 'lock ring') formed from gold sheets; the weight of the object suggests that these are probably wrapped around a copper-alloy core. The ring is bi-conical in form, with flat triangular terminals. There is a prominent ridge running around the outer edge. Both faces are decorated by transverse, parallel striations. There is some damage to the inner edge of one of the faces, where the two sheets have come apart slightly. Description: The hoard consists of a copper-alloy spearhead and a copper-alloy axehead, as well as six copper-alloy waste globules from casting, a circular lead plug and two waste lead- or silicone-based globules, possibly of the substance known as 'cremation slag', 'clinker' or 'cramp'. It is possible that the lead item is residual as the field in which the hoard was found has been heavily ploughed. However, lead is not unknown in association with Bronze Age hoards as it was used in the casting process to get a smoother cast. A sample of charcoal was taken from the hole. The hoa…

A cast copper alloy, flanged axe probably dating from the Middle Bronze Age, about 1400-1300BC. Metalwork Stage IX, Needham Period 5; Taunton metalwork assemblage. The artefact is incomplete and extremely worn with some of the butt end and part of the lower end and the blade missing. The surface shows large patches of corrosion to the point of perforation (holes) in the winges. The wings were of flattish-diamond shape and there was a small, not very pronounced stop ridge in the middle of the body, between the two wings. The blade appears to have been not much splayed despite the wear.…

Mid to late Bronze Age serrated implement, and possible knife/scraper, formed on a tertiary flake of pale honey flint with large cream inclusions. Serrated edges have been formed by short, semi-parallel, abrupt retouch to the distal/mesal edges and the oblique distal end edge. The height of the dorsal ridge has been reduced and the proximal end thinned by invasive, scaled, low-angled retouch. Dates from c1600 to c800 BC. The length is 41mm, width 17mm, thickness 8mm, and the weight is 4.60g.

The object is sub-spherical in form with a flattened upper surface and a tapering projected arm suggesting that it has been created by pouring the metal into the mould. These sprues are commonly found in late Bronze Age hoards, but can be of other dates as well and it is possible that it is Roman used in the making of a small object like a brooch.
