These phases correspond with Needham's Period 5 (c. 1500 - 1150 BC). An incomplete copper alloy socketed axehead of late Bronze Age date (c 1000 - 800 BC) corresponding to the Ewert Park metalworking phase (Needham’s (1996) Period 7). The surviving portion of the axehead is 53mm in width and 43.9mm in length, comprising the front end which has a flared, semi circular blade, with pointed ends. There is no evidence of any decoration or casting seams; however most of the original surface has been lost to corrosion. The break across the axehead reveals the interior to be hollow and the cross section to be of a sub rectangular shape.

There is a patch of cortex remaining on the convex face, making this a secondary flake. There are clear conchoidal ripple marks on the flat face together with evidence of some small-scale flake removal. The scraper is a light pinkish brown in colour, with the fl…

The blade flares from the stop ridge forming an roughly convex cutting-edge, but it is uneven due to damage. The blade tapers from the stop ridge to the blade edge, creating a wedge-shaped, triangular profile. The blade length seems short in proportion to the butt length when compared to other palstaves.
