Incomplete and broken cast copper alloy dagger of middle Bronze Age date. The dagger, which is in two parts, has a single mid-rib running the length of the blade flanked by a line of three slight ridges to either side forming part of the bevelled edge of the blade. The lower slopes of the central mid-rib are decorated with impressed points arranged in approximately four lines but the centre of the mid rib is undecorated. Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lower part of a cast cu-alloy socketed axe, probably of a Irish bag-shaped axe, dating from the Later Bronze Age, i.e. c.1000-800BC. Only the main body and blade of the axe remain: the mouth and loop are missing. The mouth would have been rectangular with one small loop at the side. The main body of the axe is undecorated, and the axe looks well worn and resharpened. The casting seams at the sides were flatted and smoothed. Irish or bag-shaped axes are one type of Late Bronze Age socketed axes: they are quite short/stumpy and are seldom decorated with ribs or a more elaborate pattern.

A total of 97 flints have been identified as worked amongst a larger assemblage of natural flakes, with a combined total weight of 1724.55g. They have a later Prehistoric date range from the Neolithic through Bronze Age, c.4,000-800 BC. 1. A sub-circular flake core with mainly heat-shattered surfaces dating to the later Prehistoric period. 2. Long natural flint utilised as long flake core with only two flakes removed. Cast copper alloy blade from a palstave or Middle Bronze Age flanged axe, sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in section, tapering to the blade terminal. The blade is narrow tapering and the axe is narrow and unlooped and the butt is broken. The axe has a well defined, rounded stop-ridge on both sides rising at right angles to the septum. The side flanges are too damaged to allow definition of their shape or height. The blade is narrow and trapezoidal, widening gently to the cutting edge, with no added flare to the tips. A copper-alloy awl of probable late Bronze Age date. The artefact is of rectangular section, on one side tapering to a point, on the other to a wedge-shaped terminal. The side ending in the wedge has been bent halfway along, forming an angle of approximately 45 degrees. It seems likely, given the regular nature of the bend, that it represents a deliberate adaptation of the tool. The artefact has a dark blueish-green patina and is corroded. It measures 66.3mm long, 5.6mm wide (at the centre point) and weighs 6.53g.

Brown flint with cortex, and heavy patina on one side. Debitage. Struck flint bearing four or more conchoidal fractures from removal of flakes with a hard hammer, an operation which post-dated the accumulation of a heavy patina on one unworked face. Though conceivably intended as an awl, this object bears no discernible trace of use as such. Suggested date: Possibly Bronze Age, 2150-800BC. Mid grey flint with cortex on one side, patinated on the other. Possible Scraper (identified by finder). A thumbnail scraper probably made from a naturally-formed pot-lid flake; cortex appears on one side, and patination on the ventral surface. Dark grey (outer) and pale brown (inner) flint with cortex Possible scraper. A sub-triangular flint chip with hard hammer retouch along one edge and (probably) on the striking platform.
