Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating to the early Bronze Age or Beaker Period (c. 2400-1500 BC).
This arrowhead has been knapped from a light grey-white piece of flint and there is no cortex remaining. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan with sharp point and is lentoid in cross section. It is broadly symmetrical in shape, with two notches chipped into the base of the flint to separate the barbs and the tang, both barbs are still intact. Both the long sides of the arrowhead have been precisely retouched to create sharp edges. The obje…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint waste flake (debitage) probably of late Mesolithic to Neolithic date and reworked at a later Neolithic to Bronze age date.
The flint appears to have been hard hammer struck from a secondary flake, with a pronouced bulb of percussion and single striking platform with surviving cortex. On the dorsal face is a deep smooth concave thumb shaped depression with a single arise. There are crude removals, possibly damage at the end of the arise near the distal edge. The flake has been retouched on multiple areas with regular long scaled abrupt retouch comprising four rem…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: York
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy fragment of a blade, probably a dagger or rapier, dating to the late Bronze Age (c.1200-800 BC).
The fragment is sub-rectangular in plan and narrows slightly to one end. It has a shallow lentoid cross-section. At the mid point, the blade tapers towards the cutting edge at each side. Each end terminates with a break that is worn and patinated, which suggests it was broken in antiquity. The surface is smooth with a dark brown patina.

An incomplete Late Bronze Age copper alloy tanged chisel, dating to c 1150 - 850 BC. The handle and blade is missing. The chisel was cast in one piece but can be described in two sections. It has a rectangular tang in subsection which abuts the ovoid-sectioned, collared handle stop of the chisel blade. At the other end would have been the chisel blade beyond the tang. At this point there is a worn break.
This artefact has a dark orange brown patina.

Fragment of a Bronze Age tanged chisel of Late Bronze Age date, probably of Wilburton or Ewart Park metalworking industry, dated to c. 1150 – 750BC.
Only a small section of the tang survives but is clearly square in section. It flares slightly to the collar which is sub oval in form. The blade flares below this collar to give a blade width of 29.02 mm. The blade faces are near-flat and thin gradually towards the edge. The surface is pitted with a mid-brown patina. On one side an incised line runs parrallel to the angled edge of the blade, c. 3mm from the edge. It…

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete probable copper-alloy tanged chisel, or trunnion tool, likely dating to the Middle Bronze Age (c.1500-1150 cal BC). It has a light green-grey patina.
It probably belongs to the metalworking tradition phase VIII - IX, which corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 5; circa 1500-1150 cal. BC.
In profile, you can clearly see where it has been heavily used on one edge. It is sub-rectangular in plan with the trunnions, projecting out 11.5mm and 6.5mm from the sides. However, it is missing its butt end, as there is a post-depositional break just above th…

A fragment of a socketed chisel or miniature flat axe dating from the Late Bronze Age c. 1150-800 BC.
The fragment comprises a flat blade which tapers inwards as the thickness increases forming a broadly trapezoidal fragment. The fragment terminates short of full length with a worn transverse break. The fragment is hollow with the interior containing some organic material. Viewing the object towards the socket presents an elongated oval cross-section. The blade edge is fairly worn but otherwise undamaged. All the surfaces of the f…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy (bronze) socketed axehead of middle to late Bronze Age date (c. 1300-800 BC). The fragment comprises the blade, above which is a worn and abraded break that reveals a shallow portion of the socket.
The fragment is sub-trapezoidal in plan and has a triangular cross section. The blade is an asymmetrical crescent, which is possibly due to wear and abrasion. The angle of the right-hand side of the blade is steeper than that of the left-hand side. The broken edge of the axe runs at an angle inwards from the bottom before rising towards the top end of …
