Possible fragment of a Bronze Age copper alloy flat axe head, c. BC 2350-801. The artefact consists of a solid, sub-rectangular copper alloy fragment with rectangular profile. One of the edges is linear and bevelled with a rounded corner and some small nicks and dents, possibly resulting from use as a cutting edge. The opposite edge is more irregular and not bevelled. One short end looks intact, with a rounded corner. The opposite short end is broken diagonally. One face has a smooth, brown patina. The other face has a brown patina which has been pitted and dented revealing green corr…

Small barbed and tanged arrowhead of Green, H, S, (1980) type Sutton b, with the barbs just shorter than the tang, made from a struck flake, unusually with the bulb of percussion originally orientated at the tang (they tend to be orientated to the point), the concentric ripples to the ventral face are somewhat exaggerated. The flint is now patinated orange/brown from contact with iron oxides in the soil, The main shaping was quickly pressure flaked to a fairly steep angle, as opposed to the invasive pressure flaking on larger examples; this is probably due to the small size of the arro…

The other half is circular in cross section, and tapers to a sharp round point on opposing end. The surface has a very dark green/black patina, with considerable pitting. No decoration is evident. Dimensions: length: 59.39mm,  width (at middle) 5.62mm,  weight: 7.43g Plain copper alloy awls are hard to date precisely and found from the Late Bronze Age through to the Medieval period, see:…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy bun ingot dating to the later middle to late Bronze Age (c. 1150 - 600 BC). The fragment comprises a quarter of an ingot which is plano-convex in section and a quarter circle in plan, with old breaks on two perpendicular sides and the third being curved. The shape suggests an origin in a bowl furnace rather than a mould. The surface is pitted, which is likely the result of air bubbles formed during the casting process. Length: 81.1 mm Height: 30.4 mm Width: 64.4 mm Weight: 588 g Similar…

An incomplete, cast copper alloy spearhead, probably dating to the middle or late Bronze Age (c.1550 – 800 BC). Only the tip of the spear remains, and is broken into two conjoining fragments. The fragments together result in an object which is narrow and triangular in plan, tapering to the point. It has a pronounced, lozenge-shaped midrib which is solid and runs to the point of the spear, with narrow wings of the blade to either side. The breaks appear to be ancient and highly abraded. The fragments have a dark…

A fragment of a cast late Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axe head, dating from about 1300-700 BC. The fragment consists of the axe's blade above which is a worn and abraded break that reveals a shallow portion of the socket, c. 2 mm deep. The axe fragment is sub-trapezoidal in plan. The broken edge of the axe runs transversely across its body giving an irregular, but mostly flat, edge. In cross section the body of the axe is sub-rectangular, as revealed by the break, while the blade is vesica (a pointed oval) shaped. At the broken termination of the axehead is the…

Fragment of the haft part of a middle to late Bronze Age copper-alloy side-looped palstave axehead. The butt is extant and fairly well preserved. At the other end, the fragment terminates in a worn transverse break. Just before the break, a remnant of the side loop (a small integral lump) projects from one side. The fragment tapers in width only very slightly from the break to the butt. The flanges on one side are better preserved than the other. Viewed side-on they form a triangle, tapering from the break to a point at the butt. This would be replicated on the other side bu…

Incomplete barbed and tanged arrowhead, of slightly brown patinated mottled grey flint, both faces are extensively pressure flaked with the flake terminations passing over each other at the centre, no sign of the original surface of the flake blank that was used to make this. The tang has survived, though both barbes are missing, one side has been snapped along the axis of the length, taking the barb with it, both the breaks appear to be transverse bending fractures and not impact damage, they are probably post depositional from having heavy agricultural machinery driven over the top. …

Description: Piece of gold rod, probably a small fragment of a flange-twisted or bar-twisted torc with three flanges, now bent into a spiral of two full turns. One end is original, with a rounded tip and neat triangular cross-section. From the rounded tip, the terminal flares slightly for c. 10mm and runs straight, before starting to coil. As it starts to curve, each face becomes concave so that the cross-section is Y-shaped, and the rod is then neatly twisted as well as bent into a coil. After two full turns the rod is apparently cut or broken. It is…

A curved cast copper alloy fragment, possibly from the blade from a middle to later Bronze Age axehead of uncertain type. The fragment is 23.7mm long and has a curved cutting edge with a triangular side profile. One edge of the break has a slightly outward curving lip, perhaps suggesting distortion when the blade bent before breaking on impact.

Early Middle Bronze Age short flanged axe, in corroded condition; parts of the original surface survive, but they are surrounded by surface loss and crusty surface expansion, the former especially to the edges. The original surfaces are patinated dark glossy green, the corrosion is shades of medium to light green. The shape is reminiscent of a standard early Palstave axe, though the stop ridge is far less pronounced;it is little more than a low, straight semi-circular bar (c. 3 mm high) defining the end of the septum and the beginning of the blade, set just within the confines of…
