Fragment of the haft part of a middle to late Bronze Age copper-alloy side-looped palstave axehead. The butt is extant and fairly well preserved. At the other end, the fragment terminates in a worn transverse break. Just before the break, a remnant of the side loop (a small integral lump) projects from one side. The fragment tapers in width only very slightly from the break to the butt. The flanges on one side are better preserved than the other. Viewed side-on they form a triangle, tapering from the break to a point at the butt. This would be replicated on the other side bu…

A fragmentary and very worn narrow Palstave of the Middle Bronze Age, dating from around 1600-1150 cal BC. The palstave is broadly rectangular in plan and is lentoid in profile. There are raised ridges on the outer edge of each side and a stop ridge across the centre, forming a H shape in cross-section. The butt is thinner than the blade. The axehead is a dark green in colour with an uneven patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil has resulted in the loss of most of the original surface detail. The object is 57.9mm long, 17.9mm wide at the stop ridge, 10.7…

A complete Middle to Late Bronze Age copper-alloy early unlooped palstave of primary phase group II dating c. 1500-1250 BC. There is no loop on the palstave. The blade of the palstave is sub-trapezoidal in plan with straight sides and flared blade tips. The blade edge is abraded, slightly blunt and has small notch at one end of the blade. Both faces of the blade are decorated with a single rib which falls short of the stop ridge and at the opposing end terminates in a triangular wedge aligned and extending into the upper edge of the blade facet. The sides of t…

A complete cast copper-alloy palstave like chisel or axe of Middle Bronze Age date. It has a long blade of rectangular section, which tapers to a curved, narrow cutting edge, triangular in section. This expands beyond the blade either side to finish with a short section. The butt end would have been flat but is slightly damaged and therefore curves inwards slightly. The palstave is deep with prominent flanges either side which form a deep, lenticellular shape. The stop ridges are therefore deep too. No casting seem is apparent. The surfaces of the chisel are ve…

An incomplete Bronze Age cast copper alloy palstave, c.1200-1000 BC. This palstave is badly corroded, with little of the original surface remaining. It is comprised of a narrow blade, with the stubs of an attachment loop on one side, and a raised point at the stop ridge, just before the blade. It has narrow flanges that end in a D-shaped or shield decoration. This combination of features makes it difficult to date, as there are few examples that share all these characteristics. Edward Caswell has kindly helped to date this item, and noted that the attachment loop rules out early…

A complete cast copper-alloy palstave like chisel of Middle Bronze Age date. It has a long blade of rectangular section, which tapers to a curved, narrow cutting edge, triangular in section. The palstave is deep with prominent flanges either side. A casting seam is apparent down both sides of the chisel. Notches on either side are asymetrical and might suggest a misaligned mould. There is also decoration in the form of two shield shape depressions side by side, which is a form of 'trident' decoration. The surfaces of the chisel are pitted in places but …

A fragment from the blade of a copper alloy Bronze Age palstave axehead dating from the Middle Bronze Age (c.1600-1150 cal BC). This is the blade end of a bronze age axehead.  It is solid and of sub-rectangular cross-section, having two short curved and two long curved sides.  The fragment tapers to the edged blade, which is slightly recurved. While it has been possible to identify the fragment as part of a blade from a palstave axehead, due to the missing portions it is difficult to conclusively identify the type . Palstaves broadly date to the Middle Bronze Age …

An incomplete, unlooped copper-alloy palstave axehead dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1500-1140 BC. The blade flares from the stop ridge forming an roughly convex cutting-edge, but it is uneven due to damage. The blade tapers from the stop ridge to the blade edge, creating a wedge-shaped, triangular profile. The blade length seems short in proportion to the butt length when compared to other palstaves. On both faces of the palstave, there are two depressions forming a central ridge, creating the shape of a shield. The stop ridge is wide…
