Complete unlooped copper-alloy Middle to Late Bronze Age palstave axehead. The H-shaped hafting channels at the butt are in good condition, with most of the original edges surviving on all four flanges. The butt narrows before a worn transverse break. The (abraded) stop ridge is slightly higher than the flanges. The septum is 57.1mm long. Beneath the stop ridge on both faces is a moulded shield-shaped pattern, bisected by a prominent longitudinal ridge creating a trident pattern. The ridges fade before the cutting edge. The crescentic cutting edge is jagged and abraded. There are no ca…

Two fragments of a single Middle Bronze Age copper alloy palstave. One fragment consists of the butt end and the other the inner part of the blade. The two fragments fit together neatly at the break. In profile the object has leaf-shaped flanges that become rapidly narrower beyond the stop-ridge along the sides of the blade. The stop-ridge is a raised bar of the same height as the butt flanges. There does not appear to have been a side-loop originally. The blade appears to have been 'crinoline' or S-shaped originally, although the outer end is missing making it difficult to confirm th…

A Bronze Age unlooped early/primary palstave, dating to c. 1500 - 1300 BC. The blade of the palstave is broadly sub-triangular in plan with relatively straight (but with slightly expanded) sides and a expanding convex cutting edge (fantailed). In profile the blade is sub-triangular with the widest section being before the stop ridge. Beneath the stop-ridge, on both sides of the palstave is a shield shaped depression. The rear part of the axe, from the stop ridge to the butt, is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in section (profile) with the widest part behind the stop ridge, …

An incomplete and highly corroded copper-alloy probable unlooped palstave type axehead dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1500-1300 BC, perhaps of the Acton Park II metalworking assemblage. The butt and most of the blade have broken away in old damage, though otherwise the axehead is preserved relatively intact. It is broadly rectangular in plan and section, demonstrating a profile which thickens towards the midpoint of the object before thinning again as the axe flares outwards slightly towards the blade end, with parallel sides and a presumably originally convex cutting edge (now l…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy fragment of a palstave-type axe dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1500-1300 BC. It is probably of the Acton Park II or Taunton metalworking assemblages, though little more can be said referring to the type due to its incompleteness. Only the butt section survives, which has a rounded end and is broadly sub-rectangular in plan, broken at its lower edge in an irregular oblique truncation. The axe demonstrates prominent shoulder-flanged on both sides, giving the fragment a broadly sub-triangular appearance when viewed in section. Preserved in good condit…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy palstave axehead dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1500-1150 BC. Only the midsection remains, with the cutting edge, stop-ridge, shoulders and side-flanges broken away in old damage. It is broadly triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in section, being heavily waisted at its mid-section before flaring outwards abruptly to form the lower section and cutting edge of the axehead. On both sides of the object close to its upper truncated edge a small central depression is visible, while heavily worn casting seams are visible on both the sides. The break a…

A Middle Bronze Age copper-alloy palstave axe, complete save for most of the side loop. The axe measures 167mm and the width of the blade is 60mm. The weight is 500g. The axe has a central ridge on the blade and short raised triangular decoration below the stop ridge. The length of the septum is 67.75mm. Original surfaces survive best on the septum; elsewhere the surfaces are much pitted. There is a slight ridge above the blade on both sides indicating a change of angle due to sharpening.

A fragment from a possible palstave of Middle Bronze Age date. It is rectangular with a prominent stop ridge and flattened sub-rectangular panels to either side which terminate in old breaks. On each outer edge are possible traces of a casting seam, but this is uncertain due to the preservation of the object. Some surfaces display evidence of burning. This possible palstave measures 27.24mm in length, 17.55mm in width, 14.25mm in thickness, 16.42g in weight.

A complete, but slightly worn and heavily pitted, unlooped palstave of Middle Bronze Age date. The butt end is rectangular in form, possibly missing its top edge due to old breaks, and has relatively low and worn flanges. At each side are possible traces of a casting seam, but this is uncertain due to the preservation of the object. Below the stop ridge there is shield pattern decoration, beneath which extends the splayed blade. This is triangular in form and section with a relatively straight cutting edge, both faces showing extensive signs of post-depositional corrosion and pitting …

Complete cast copper alloy low flanged ‘type Blackrock’ middle Bronze Age palstave axe. The back portion of the axe has a septum that is rectangular in plan with a pronounced backstop. At their highest point, the side flanges do not rise past the backstop. They angle down gently towards the rear of the axe and reach the septum at a point just before the butt. This gives the back portion of the axe a wedge shaped, but profile with slightly curving edges. The butt of the axe is slightly chipped and worn. The blade of the axe has only a short straight section before flaring out into a…

The butt end of a copper-alloy probably middle Bronze Age axe, with the beginning of side flanges and casting seam visible. Probably from a palstave type axe, measuring 22mm in surviving length, 23mm in width and 10mm in thickness. The butt end is squared and not sharp. The break appears ancient and worn. The surface is badly corroded with a mixture of corrosive products and encrustations appearing as pale green and brown areas over a dark brown patina.

A complete bronze unlopped palstave of middle Bronze Age date circa 1500-1200 BC. 135mm in length, 61mm in width across the blade and 25mm in thickness. It has a shield pattern decoration. There are numerous linear grazes to the surface and some dents on the blade edge, these are modern agricultural damage. There is also a series of parallel, crude, oblique abrasion marks on edge bevels and a series of linear abrasion marks on the blade above the bevel, these look original and are presumably cleaning or use marks. The palstave is patinated a deep brown with small patches of …

A bronze trident-pattern looped palstave, small in size measuring 125mm in length, 47mm in width across the blade and 25mm in thickness. There are extensive but variable amounts of surface corrosion and pocking, and a large semi-circular void in septum near the butt which is probably a casting flaw. One gouge line on the surface is probably recent agricultural damage. The small amounts of original surface that can be seen are patinated dark brown the corroded areas are medium to pale green in colour. Bronze palstave with 'trident' decoration, this palstave is unlooped and the blade end is missing. All surfaces are affected by invasive corrosion resulting in uneven surfaces with traces of a dark brown patina but mainly pale and medium green corrosive products. It is a Rowlands (1976, British Archaeology Report 31) Class 1 Group 3 'developed shield pattern' palstave, though the blade has suggestions of raised side flanges, especially on one face, which are reminiscent of Class 3 ('Birchington Type') palstaves. Both types are contemporary and date mainly from the end of the middle …

A small cast bronze fragment probably part of the butt of an axe. This fragment is roughly rectangular in shape and measures 22mm by 16mm in size and it 5mm in thickness at its thickest point and 3mm thick at its terminal. The axe has a dark brown patina with small patches of powdery green corrosion visible. A small portion of the side flanges survives, the butt is slightly convex. One side has the remains of a central ridge or a possible casting seam. This suggests that this fragment is from a palstave rather than from a flanged axe, and therefore is middle Bronze Age in date (C1…

A complete unlooped bronze palstave, measuring 135mm in length, 60.5mm in width, at the blade and 26mm thick. It has a trident pattern with four internal splayed ribs. The septum also has traces of parallel grooves against the stop ridge. The arched blade is widely splayed with re-curved tips. The side casting seams have been carefully tooled away and faint traces of herringbone decoration can be seen, these are most likely to have been applied after casting. Some relatively minor damage to the blade edge, including one chip can be seen. Several areas of bright surface can be see…
