A fragment of a Middle Bronze Age copper alloy palstave dating circa 1500-1150 BC. The fragment consists of the crescentic cutting edge and lower blade. The upper body terminates in a worn and irregular rectangular break. The solid cross-section and the mid rid on both sides suggests the object is a palstave rather than a socketed axehead.   The object measures 61.9 mm in length, 63.5 mm in width (across blade), 27.9 mm wide (across the body). The blade edge is 3.8 mm thick and the body is 14.4 mm thick. It weighs 170.0 g. All s…

A complete Middle Bronze Age palstave axe of the Group 3 type dating to c. 1400 – 1150 cal BC. The butt of the axe is c.15.4mm wide, c.3.4mm thick and is slightly worn giving it an uneven slightly convex shape.. The septum measures c. 48.8mm in length. The flanges of this axe begin just after the butt and widen in a slightly convex line up the length of the septum. After this point, in side profile, the blade sides narrows in a slightly convex curve towards the cutting edge.  The blade is decorated beneath the stop by a trident pattern created…

A fragment of a Middle Bronze Age copper alloy palstave dating circa 1500-1150 BC. The fragment consists of the crescentic cutting edge and lower blade. The upper body terminates in a worn and irregular break. The solid cross-section suggests the object is a palstave rather than a socketed axehead, although there is no evidence for a central casting seam on the side. All surfaces however are heavily worn with a green/brown coloured surface patina. For a more complete palstave discovered in Staffordshire see (WMID-9C1A13) and (WMID-F2F5ED) discovered in De…

A near complete, looped, Middle to Late Bronze Age transitional palstave axe with medium/high flanges, and a stop ridge, dating to c.1250 to 950 cal BC. A section of the butt is missing. The butt of the axe is flat, c.23mm wide and 3.3mm thick.  The septum measures 52.7mm in length and it thickens and then narrows again towards the stop ridge from 5mm at the break across the septum. The flanges of the axe expand from the butt of the axe twoards the stop in a broadly straight line. This gives the upper and lower surfaces of the axe a sub-triangular form before the bl…

The blade of the palstave is sub-triangular in plan, with convex expanding sides, and a convex cutting edge. The cutting edge is slightly damaged, but appears to be symmetrical. The cutting edge measures 49.9 mm in width and is 2.4 mm thick. The blade has a length of 90.0 mm. In profile the blade is sub-triangular with the widest section being before the stop ridge. It measures 25.4 mm&n…

A complete palstave of Middle Bronze Age dating, probably of the Wantage type, part of Acton Park / Taunton phase, c 1400 - c. 1150 cal BC. Around 95% of the palstave is present, with the butt incomplete. The septum is straight and does not taper towards the butt. The flanges start off parallel to the stop ridge and taper in a straight diagonal line to the butt. The blade has straight sides as it expands towards a crescentic blade edge. The blade is longer than the butt. A shield design (trident variation) is present at the top of the blade, with one central ridge and two inward …

A complete, looped, Middle to Late Bronze Age palstave axe with medium/high flanges, and a high stop ridge, dating to c.1350 to 1150 cal BC. The butt of the axe is flat, c.18.6mm wide and 3.8mm thick. It is slightly worn having lost one small sub-rectangular chip on one of its wide surfaces. The septum measures 66.4mm in length and grows in thickness from 3.8mm at the butt to c.10.9mm adjacent to the stop-ridge. The flanges of the axe begin 15.3mm after the butt and smoothly widen up the remaining length of the septum before narrowing again to the blade quite quickly after t…
