A complete worked flint or chert tertiary flake or blade of Late Neolithic to Bronze Age date (C.2500-1500BC). Description: The object is broadly rectangular in plan and trapezoid in cross-section. It is also slightly curved in profile. It has been produced from a medium orange flint. There is no evidence of striking on either face; the dorsal face has two prominent longitudinal ridges to each side. The edges have short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch to both the dorsal and ventral faces. The dorsal face has a areas of white surface patina. Measurements: length: 53mm; width: …

A possible flint scraper tool. The object is of light grey flint and sub-triangular in shape with a rounded point. There appears to be some flaking at the round point or the dorsal face, which may not be natural, and may therefore suggest that the object is a lithic artifact. It is likely that the flake on which the tool was produced was a secondary, due to the occurrence of a small portion of cortex on the proximal end. There are no distinctive ripples or a bulb of percussion present on the ventral face of the flake, though there are at least two small removals at the very tip of …

Partially worked flake of grey flint, likely dating to the late Neolithic/early Bronze Age, c. 3000 - 1500 BC. There is retouch along the upper left edge when viewed from the ventral face which is scaled and thins the flake edge slightly. The right edge of the ventral face also shows evidence of retouch, along the bottom edge forming a shallow crescent. The upper right edge of the ventral face is straight and diagonal. When viewed from the dorsal face this edge is backed almost all along its length, with only a small portion in the middle showing no evidence of retouch. The reto…

Primary flake which has been utilised as a scraper or other lithic hand-held tool. The flake's dorsal surface is covered almost entirely by cortex, suggesting it was struck as a primary flake without any prior removals on the dorsal surface. It is likely that the flake was utilised opportunistically, as there is little in terms of retouch. Where retouch is seen, primarily on the mid right edge when viewed from the dorsal face, it takes the form of parallel removals forming a steep 'backed' edge. This was likely done to blunt this portion of the edge. The retouch continues, though t…

Possible debitage flake with evidence of some edge flaking. Likely early Bronze Age in date, c. 2500 - 1500 BC. The ventral face is uneven and mottled, though the right edge does show evidence of retouch in a parallel scaled fashion at the section nearest the butt. The retouch seems to continue along the right side for the length of the flak, though is not as clearly defined toward the tip. The dorsal face shows evidence of removals toward the butt and along the right side of the arris. These are not as regular as the small retouch on the ventral face. It is likely that …

Lithic flake implement of probable Bronze Age date c. 2500 - 800BC. The implement is composed of dark grey flint with mottled light grey inclusions. The flake is irregularly shaped and was knapped from a larger core or nodule. Despite the long edge being thin and sharp, there is limited evidence of retouch along the edge which would suggest refinement of the working edge. The flake was likely knapped via hard hammer technique as the curving fracture scar on the ventral face suggests that it was removed with significant force and perhaps with limited precision. There is evi…

A natural flake with evidence of retouch, probably dating to the Late Bronze Age (1000-800BC). The object is oval in shape with evidence of short, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch along two of the edges. Kevin Leahey notes that this is likely an "opportunistic" flint made in later Prehistory from natural or re-used flints. Dimensions: length: 91.34 mm; width: 50.82 mm; thickness: 13.20 mm; weight: 77.71g.

An almost complete lithic dagger dating to the Bronze Age. The dagger is broadly oval in plan with a pointed end, thickened middle and narrow terminal. The terminal appears to have suffered a blunt break. The flint is a light mottled grey, with a creamy white patination covering c. 90% of the dorsal face and c. 25% of the ventral face. Less than 5% of cortex remains, located at the tip of the dagger. The bulb of percussion is pronounced. The ventral face has long, thinning removals on the dorsal face and short, parallel retouches along the proximal side. There are small, short retouch…

A point has been fashioned at the distal end. The implement is dark grey in colour with some white flecks and there is no patination.

Lithic implement. Hazel Martingell kindly notes that this is a Bronze Age side scraper. It is sub circular in plan and sub lozenge shaped in section (twisted). It is made from a primary flake off of a cobble and is very worn, probably due to water rolling. There is retouch along the right edge and a clear bulb of percussion indicating a hard hammer strike. The scraper is 41.46mm long, 40.14mm wide, 12.42mm thick and weighs 22.17g.

Lithic implement. Hazel Martingell kindly notes that this is an early Bronze Age bi-facially worked knife. It is rectangular in plan and lentoid in section. It is made on a piece of rich brown flint with a patch of mid grey. Each face is clearly carefully flaked and the edges retouched. The knife is broken, having snapped at one end. It has a surviving length of 37.58mm, is 17.24mm wide, 5.36mm thick and weighs 5g. Knives of this date are considered to be unusual finds in Essex.

Lithic implement. Hazel Martingell kindly notes that this is a piercer of the later prehistoric period, dating from the late Bronze Age to as late as the Iron Age. It is subsquare in plan with one clearly extended point to one corner. The bulb of percussion is visible. The flint is dark grey with small white patches and a small patch of beige cortex. It is 35.94mm long (including the point), 22.84mm wide, 8.94mm thick and weighs 5.71g.

Lithic implement. Teardrop shaped in plan and sublozenge shaped in section. Hazel Martingell notes that this piece of light brown flint with cream coloured inclusions is a natural flint with pot lid fractures. However there are knapped areas. These pieces are called ‘tools of convenience’ as they are a mixture of natural and worked removals. These pieces are typical of the later prehistoric period, 1,500BC and onwards, but do continue to be used into the historic period. The piece recorded here was probably used as a pick or scraper. It is 137.78mm long, 85.06mm wide, 30.76mm wide …

Incomplete barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. This arrowhead has suffered some damage and is now missing the points to each barb and most of the tang. It is 33.68mm long, 27.82mm wide, 4.22mm thick and weighs 3.87g. The two long sides of the arrowhead form an angle of approximately 45 degrees. The flint is opaque and mid grey in colour, with small patches of creamy white. Flint arrowheads of this type were in use in the early Bronze Age sometime between 2200 and 1400BC. An example can also be seen in Pierpoint 1981, Prehistoric Flintwork in Britain figure 13, number 17.

Flint artefact. This object is a retouched flake, probably of late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age date. It is subtriangular in plan. The bulb of percussion is clearly visible on the ventral side. There is clear retouch along both misal edges and at the point. There is cortex on the butt end. The flint is opaque and dark grey with the tip being more translucent and amber in colour. It is 29.94mm long, 24.62mm wide, 7.52mm thick and weighs 5.97g.

Fragment of flint implement. This fragment is subtriangular in plan and a flattened oval in section. It is 44mm long, 28mm wide at the widest point and 7mm thick. It weighs 11.71g. The flint is a very dark grey in colour, almost black, with one small patch of cortex to the broad end of one side. Given the fragmentary nature of the object, there is no evidence of the bulb of percussion. The fragment is retouched down both misal edges. The very tip is slightly damaged. The object seems to have been snapped, presumably in antiquity, given that the broken edge is very straight and 'clean'…

This backed knife has been made on a thermally fractured flint. It is 51mm long, 34mm wide, 12.4mm thick and weighs 22.64g. The use of thermally fractured flakes did not occur until the late Neolithic, but this flake is more likely to be late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age in date.
