A crude flint implement of late Bronze Age to early Iron Age date (c.BC 1050-600). Description: The object is fabricated from a natural, tongue-shaped flint pebble. One face is almost entirely covered with a pale brown, thin cortex, the opposite face being cortex-free with many natural flake removal scars. It is plano-convex in cross-section. It has been worked with short, semi-abrupt, sub-parallel retouch around much of its edge. Measurements: Length 67.37mm: Width 28.96mm: Thickness 9.09mm: Weight 28.26g Discussion: The angle of retouch is typical of flint scrapers but the …

Red-brown flint lithic implement. A thick flake with a sub-triangular point at one end. The dorsal side bears the rippled scar from the removal of a large flake by hard hammer strike; the ventral surface is flat. Short angled retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longest curving edge. This is limited by one of the slightly concave sides of a worn point, suggesting use of that part of the object as a borer. The opposite edge to the point bears possibly angled scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect, though some or all of these shallow scars may be the result of fo…

Late Bronze Age to early Iron Age off white heat effected flint or chert notched end scraper. There is evidence of light retouch to the mesal edges, possibly for use as side scrapers, & heavy modification to the distal end. The The distal modification was probably to make the tool more comfortable & easier to use and it may also have been to allow it to be mounted. Most likely to date to the late Bronze Age but manufacture in the early Iron Age cannot be dismissed due to the crude style of knapping. Dates to between c1000 and c400 BC. The length is 58mm, the width is 41mm and the…

Grey flint with cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, lithic implement. Long flake with cortex trimmed by the removal of long parallel flakes, and with a bulb on the ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trimmed the narrower end. Either very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect, or damage arising from use, appears along the putative cutting edge. The opposite edge is trimmed flat so as to permit pressure to be exerted. At the other end, cortex is trimmed by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, so the…

Pale grey flint lithic implement. A D-shaped flake with its straight edge and butt formed by a positive hinged fracture. Broad flakes have been struck from the dorsal side with a bulb on the ventral. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge except for one short extent, where very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect modifies the cutting edge to provide a small scraping tool. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 25.7mm, Width: 40.8mm, Thickness: 7.1mm, Weight: 8.53gms

Flint lithic implement. Leaf shaped flake with a bulb on its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows one long curving edge and also the adjacent curved end; the opposite long edge is flat and would facilitate a grip when using the cutting edge. Dense creamy patina suggests the object endured a long period of exposure after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 40.8mm, Width: 21.1mm, Thickness: 8mm, Weight: 7.88gms.

Grey-buff flint with cortex lithic implement. Flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a concave ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect forms a notch in one long side. Further short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect also follows a small curved edge or 'nose'. The ventral side accumulated light misty patina suggesting a short period of exposure before it was interrupted by invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect, again concentrated towards the 'nose'. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Le…

Dark grey flint lithic implement. Flake with two broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat rippled ventral surface. Angled invasive scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved end, while very short abrupt retouch defines a notch in one side, and forms a cutting edge along the opposite long edge. A complete lack of patina may suggest this object was incorporated into a sealed deposit very shortly after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Dark grey flint with cortex lithic implement. Small irregular flake with cortex crudely trimmed from its dorsal side and with a prominent bulb on the ventral. Vert short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a hollow curving edge. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect also follows the longest straight edge and may represent a cutting edge, if this is not merely adventitious damage. A sub-oval, flint, end scraper. The scraper has been made from a primary flake of dark brown flint. There are clear ripples of percussion across the ventral face but the striking platform and bulb of percussion have been lost due to secondary working at the proximal end. The dorsal face is partially covered in a thick, off-white cortex. The scraper has been abruptly and steeply pressure flaked around 60% of its edge with the distal end worked to produce a rounded scraping edge. There is some further, more refined pressure flaking to the proximal end of the flake These types of scrap…

A large, sub-oval, flint, end scraper. The scraper has been manufactured from a primary flake of dark grey flint. There is a flat striking platform and a clear bulb of percussion at the proximal end of the flake, with ripples of percussion across the ventral face. The dorsal face is largely covered in a thick, off-white cortex. The scraper has been abruptly and steeply pressure flaked around the distal end to form a scraping edge. There is also some recent damage to this distal end where a small area has been lost. These types of end scrapers date to the Early Bronze Age.

A small, sub-oval, flint, thumbnail scraper. The scraper has been made from a primary flake of honey-coloured flint. There is a clear bulb of percussion at the proximal end of the flake, with ripples of percussion across the ventral face. The dorsal face has a small area of thick, off-white cortex remaining. The scraper has been abruptly and steeply pressure flaked around it's entire edge with one section having further, fine retouch to give a sharper scraping edge. These types of thumbnail scrapers date to the Early Bronze Age.
