A complete hammer stone of prehistoric date (likely Mesolithic to Bronze Age c.8300-800 BC). The object is a sub-rounded shaped pebble of heavily patinated grey coloured stone, probably granitic in nature. A hammer stone, ovate in plan, profile and section, 98 mm long, 75 mm wide and 48.5 mm in thickness or height, weighing 542.4 g. The hammer stone is made from a large beach pebble of hard, fine-textured dark grey stone with dark patches from organic staining. The ventral side of the pebble has been weathered to a pale grey colour where it has come into contact with plant material within its original deposit. The pebble is unmodified apart from an oval patch, approximately 50 mm long by 30 mm wide, at one end which has been flattened by multiple percussion events in its use as a hammer…

A complete greenstone hammerstone. A flattened oval in plan and in section and sub-rectangular in profile. The entire surface has been pecked to form a symmetrical, sub-cylindrical shape which would have been comfortable in the hand, with one face almost flat and the opposite face slightly convex. Both ends have been flattened and are slightly worn through use as a hammerstone. The flatter of the two faces is very slightly worn and may have been used for rubbing whilst the convex face is slightly pitted and may also have been used as a hammerstone. Jones and Taylor (2010) describ…

A beach pebble with percussion markings in the centre of both faces, perhaps used as a hammerstone. A wide sub-oval in plan, lenticular in profile and an elongated oval in section. The ventral surface shows signs of dense pecking in an approximately circular area around 35mm in diameter. The surface pecking in the centre of the dorsal face is similar in extent but far less dense. The surface of the stone is uniformly pale creamy-grey in colour with multiple striations of red-brown iron carbonate. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach pebble from the Crackington Formation dating fro…

Cobble-sized irregular lump of flint with several areas of crushing suggestive of past use as a hammerstone. It also appears that at least one flake may have been struck from it. A roughly triangular area of whitish cortex survives on one surface, elsewhere the flint ranges in colour from cream to light green-grey to green-black. A chance find whilst metal detecting (Jeff Spencer, CPAT, January 2015).

Flat quartzite cobble rubbing stone or hammerstone, oval in plan, and oblong in profile and in section. Both surfaces have been used for rubbing and there are patches of anvil pecking in the centre of each face and on several edges, where it may have been used as a hammerstone. This is one of a group of cobbles found in the same area, made of various materials, that were used as domestic artefacts such as mullers, rubbers and whetstones. All of these would be at home on a Middle Bronze Age settlement. Unfortunately we know insufficient about the range of stone artefacts used in Neolit…
