A cast, flat copper alloy axehead, probably dating to the early Bronze Age possibly c.1950-1850 BC, on account of its narrow butt. The axehead is small and relatively narrow. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan with a rounded crescent shaped blade. The cutting edge has a width of 47.4mm and a thickness of 1.8mm. From the cutting edge, the body of the axehead initially curves inwards and then gradually narrows, more linearly. The axehead also gradually gets thicker in the centre and tapers off towards the butt, creating a broadly lentoid profile with slightly round…

A flat axe head of the early Bronze Age (2500-1200 BC), possibly composed predominantly of copper as the surface discolouration is predominantly blackish with small green patches. Much of the body is pitted and corroded, but a clearly discernible edge and a possible bulge at the midpoint make evident the former outline. The overall body shape is flared trapezoidal, lozenge shaped when viewed from above. It is not symmetrical; the 'upper' flare is considerably larger than the lower one. No flanges are present. Widest point of blade end:- 41.66mm, thickest lateral measurement:-9…

Early Bronze Age copper alloy flat axehead. It has a slightly irregular shape in plan with an angled butt and a slight flare on the bottom of the blade, whereas the top edge of the blade only broadens out slightly. One face has more of a bevel from the blade edge than the opposite, which is flatter. It is sub-rectangular in profile, coming to a gentle apex at the blade end. Brown in colour and mainly delaminated, it appears undecorated , apart from a slight raised ridge that follows the bottom curve of the blade on the flatter face. It has a pitted surface with patches of corrosio…

A miniature flat axehead of early Bronze Age date (2150- 1500 BC). The object resembles a miniature version of the earliest and simplest solid cast copper alloy axe-heads with tapering sides and rounded ends. The patina has broken away leaving a light green corroded surface. The blade is incomplete due to a modern break, probably due to the plough. A crack runs along the width of the butt end on one face. Miniature flat axes such as this tends to fit in the chronology at the very end of the early Bronze Age when developed axes are starting out. It is likely that this example is dat…
