Cast copper or bronze miniature flat axe of Early Bronze Age date (2150- 1500 BC) most probably from the first phase of the Early Bronze Age (2150-1900 BC) Needham Period 2. The axehead is sub-triangular in plan with a narrow rounded butt and slowly expanding in parallel straight sides. The cutting edge, areas of the long edges and part of the butt are all lost through movement in the ploughsoil. The cutting edge is slightly convex (bowed) and has a clear ground facet evidenced on only one edge (creating a chisel like cutting edge). In profile and cross section the axehead is lentoid.…

An incomplete cast copper alloy (Bronze) flat axe of Early Bronze Age date c. 2250-1900 BC. The axe is incomplete and only the cutting edge and lower blade survive, the butt and upper blade are lost due to an abraded but relatively recent break. It is very possibly that the other part is present in the field in which this was found. The condition of the axe is poor - small areas of a deep brown coloured surface patina are present but the majority has been removed by laminating corrosion. The tips of the blade and the cutting edge are also both abraded. The profile of the axe was proba…

A cast copper alloy (bronze) undecorated developed flat axe of Early Bronze Age date (c. 2050 - 1700 BC). This example is relatively small and uncommon within the metalworking tradition of the earlier Bronze Age. The style of this axe fits into the developed flat axes although it does not fit readily into a named sub-type due to the nature and shape of the axe. It should also be noted that this example could also be described as a tanged chisel; however the elements present correspond better to being an irregular axe. It is likely that this example is dated to the Early Bronze Age (EB…

Undecorated flat axe found in close proximity to axe described in record HESH-297346 Flat axe. Essentially complete, but significant loss from corrosion at the cutting edge and butt. Much of patina has flaked away, removing surface detail, but where intact it reveals a neat fluted design on the lower blade. This comprises longitudinal furrows which diverge as the blade splays; closest to the cutting edge there are three furrows to either side and a central triangular one. The sides of the implement are very slightly raised, possibly just as a consequence of this particular decorative t…

Undecorated flat axe found in close proximity to axe described in record HESH-298206. Flat axe. Essentially complete, but with significant loss from corrosion at the cutting edge and butt and virtually all patinated surface flaked away. The side profile, supported by a remnant of patina on one face, shows that the axe-head had a transverse stop bevel just below the middle making the haft-end longer than the blade. There is no sign of decoration where the patina is intact, but it is possible that the sides were shaped into a double longitudinal facet. Dimensions: Length: 146 mm; width c…
