Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint waste flake (debitage) probably of late Mesolithic to Neolithic date and reworked at a later Neolithic to Bronze age date.
The flint appears to have been hard hammer struck from a secondary flake, with a pronouced bulb of percussion and single striking platform with surviving cortex. On the dorsal face is a deep smooth concave thumb shaped depression with a single arise. There are crude removals, possibly damage at the end of the arise near the distal edge. The flake has been retouched on multiple areas with regular long scaled abrupt retouch comprising four rem…

A late Neolithic-Bronze Age oval flnt scraper, c.2000-1000 BC.
The curved distal end has intrusive low angle and short abrupt scaled retouch and there are removal scars from further retouch across the dorsal surface. The proximal end tapers to a small striking platform. The flint is mottled drak grey and drak brown.

Tertiary semi-hard hammer struck flake, of unpatinated glossy pale brown translucent flint, Platform removed by steep retouch, one lateral edge has two shallow notches (both c. 7 mm wide, 2 mm deep), the straighter, opposing edge is finely use-worn, probably from use as a knife. This maybe a "simple" version of a plano-convex knife. Early Bronze Age, 2350 to 1500 BC.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Denbighshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint flake of possible late Neolithic to early bronze age (c. 2700-1500BC). The flint is a translucent caramel colour with small dark flecks. There is a low crushed bulb of percussion with heavy ripple marks on the ventral face suggesting it was detached with a fairly heavy rock as a hammer. Evidence of scale-like retouch on one side only appears to be deliberate rather than accidental post-depositional damage.

A complete struck flint tertiary flake of probable later Prehistoric date, c. 4000-1150 BC. Broadly sub-triangular in plan, it has been struck from a core of mottled light grey flint and demonstrating a small patch of creamy white cortex at its distal end, the flake demonstrates two arrises on its dorsal face, a sub-lenticular platform, and a neatly prominent bulb of percussion on its ventral face suggesting hard-hammer removal. Preserved in fresh condition, it measures 37.15mm in length, 23.94mm wide at its midpoint, and 5.07mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 5.62g.

Originally an old flint flake that has been reshaped, dating to the Bronze Age, 2500- 700 BC. The surface of the dorsal face is covered by cortex, suggesting that this is a primary flake. There are short stepped retouch along the edge of the flint, which are semi abrupt. Length 59.6mm, width 57.5mm thickness 21.2mm weight 87g.

A flint cutting flake, hexagonal in plan, rhomboidal in profile and plano-convex in section. A secondary flake with a patch of cortex remaining on the distal third of the dorsal face. The remnant of the striking platform is visible at the proximal end, together with a very clear point of percussion. A large bulb of percussion is visible at the proximal end of the ventral face, together with a small bulbar scar. Conchoidal ripples are faintly visible towards the distal end of the ventral face. The dorsal face bears the scars of the removal of four earlier flakes. When viewed from the d…

A flint notched and serrated flake, sub-oval in plan, plano-convex in profile and in section. Made on a secondary flake with a layer of cortex remaining on about half of the dorsal face. The point of percussion is visible at the proximal end but impurities in the flint have resulted in a lack of a bulb of percussion although the conchoidal ripples are clearly visible across the ventral face. The dorsal face bears the scar of the removal of at least one earlier flake. Several small flakes have been removed at the proximal end of the dorsal face, resulting in a notched edge with a short…

A retouched flint flake, sub-oval in plan, plano-convex in profile and in section. A tertiary flake, the dorsal face of which bears the scars of the removal of several earlier longitudinal flakes at the distal end. At the proximal end two smaller longitudinal flakes have been removed, which terminate in negative hinge fractures mid-way across the flake. Multiple small flakes have also been removed at the upper right margin of the flake. At the upper left margin of the dorsal face at least six shallow pressure flakes have been removed to create a cutting edge. All traces of the strikin…

A flint flake probably dating between Late Neolithic and early Bronze Age, c. 2700-1600BC. The flake is broadly rectangular shape and has been struck from a secondary flake and retains about 10% of the original cortex. The dorsal face shows two negative flake scars. The striking platform is elongated shape and the ventral face exhibits a low bulb of percussion, indicative of soft hammer work. On one mesal is visible a short, scaled and semi-abrupt retouch.
The flake is a semi-translucent dark-grey colort with small and medium off-white inclusions. It measures 60.41mm in length, 26.…

A flint flake, possibly a blade, of Neolithic or Early Bronze Age period dating to 3500-800 BC. The flake is elongated shape and exhibits two negative flake scars on the dorsal surface, separated by a central rib. It has been struck from a secondary flake and retains about 5% of the original cortex. The striking platform is broadly triangular shape and on the ventral face is a lower bulb of percussion, indicative of soft hammer working. On the mesals are some traces of short, scaled and semi-abrupt retouch.
The flake is semi-translucent mottlet grey with off-white inclusions. The f…

A flint flake, trapezoid in plan, sub-rectangular in profile and triangular in section. The point of percussion is visible at the dorsal edge of the uneven striking platform. A distinct bulb of percussion is visible at the proximal end of the dorsal face with conchoidal fractures radiating towards the proximal end, which terminates in a hinge fracture. The ventral face is uneven and ridged, apparently the result of poorly controlled flaking of the original core.
The flint is dark grey with almost black striations mottled with pale grey patches, and is likely derived from a local be…

A flint flake which is sub circular in plan. This is a primary flake with almost the whole dorsal surface being covered in cortex. In two area this cortex has been removed, possibly through natural damage. There is soil adhering in the resulting crevices.
The ventral surface features a prominent bulb of percussion and a bulbal scar (partly obscured by the objects coordinates having been written in marker pen on this surface). The striking platform is present at the distal end and the point of percussion is visible. There are few visible ripple marks on this surface.
