Quartzite cobble which has been heated and dropped into water to boil it. The exterior of the stone has turned pink and is cracked by thermal shock. The originally rounded cobble has shattered and its broken faces show a hackly fracture. Fire cracked stones are a recognised feature of the Bronze Age but their function is uncertain. They may have been used boil water in wooden troughs for cooking or for use in an industrial process. It has also been suggested that they were used to generate steam is sweat-houses.
