A small, incomplete and extremely corroded cast copper alloy dirk, of early to middle Bronze Age date, probably part of the Arreton to Taunton Metalworking assemblages. The blade is pointed, tapering with concave sides to a point. It has clearly been subject to extensive and repeated re-sharpening over a prolonged period and now retains little of its original form. The rear edge is rounded and incomplete with traces of a pair of flanking and now broken rivet holes. The blade has a flat and lenticular cross section with no clear midrib.

An incomplete middle Bronze Age copper-alloy dirk, dating to c. 1700 - 1400 BC. Arreton or Acton Park phase. The dirk is almost complete, it is broken at each of the rivet holes. The hilt of the blade was originally trapezoidal in plan, some of the hilt is missing, it's mostly flat in cross section. It has a slightly convex butt. From the end of the hilt, it widens slightly before narrowing quickly in smooth concave arcs to the blade. It then narrows more gradually down its remaining length to end in a still sharp point. The dirk is flat at its hi…

A copper alloy middle Bronze Age dirk of Group II, dating from the Arreton to Taunton phase, 1700 - 1275 cal BC. It has a rounded butt with two circular rivet holes positioned near the edge. A curved line visible on one face 16mm from the butt may show the extent of the hafting. There is a corresponding change of patina in the same place on the other face. The blade is of pointed oval cross-section and is undecorated. There are narrow edge facets about 3-4mm from the edge of the blades. The sides are concave under the butt, then taper to a point. Measurements are; length 154.4mm, …

Middle Bronze Age bronze dirk, probably of Group III weapons with a damaged butt
The dirk is near-complete with some peripheral damage to the butt (with a length of 121.3mm and a weight of 31.0g). The apex and shoulders of the butt are corroded and rounded (with a width of 31.1mm and a thickness at the apex of 0.8mm). There are the remains of a rivet hole on one side (with a diameter of 5.9mm) and probably the corroded remains on another on the opposite side. It is now unclear whether the butt has significantly eroded around the rivet holes or whether the dirk has a reworked but…

An incomplete cast Bronze Age dirk dating to c.BC 1500-1150. (Burgess and Gerloff’s Group IV). The dirk has a central blade that tapers to a point. It is triangle shaped in plan and lozenge shaped in section. The blade has a central thickening and is broken towards the end of the butt. It is not clear the break is intentional or post depositional damage. The edges of the blade have been dulled and damaged, creating an edge that has become serrated. The dirk has a green patina with areas that have blackened throughout the blade.

A fragment of the tip of a blade from a Bronze Age dirk or rapier. The blade fragment is narrow and triangular, 29.2mm in lengh and tapers to a point. The cross section is lozengiform with a broad, low and smoothly rounded midrib suggesting that it may correspond to Burgess and Gerloff's (1981) Group IV.

Copper alloy possible dirk fragment, as kindly suggested by Ed Caswell, who comments: ' I wonder wether this is not closer to a rapier/dirk fragment due to the lozenge shaped cross section and quite straight sides?...'.. Cast lentoid-to-lozenge-shaped-section fragment from a very slightly tapered blade; this might as easily be from a robust dagger as a spearhead [which was the finder's initial suggestion]. Fiercely abraded. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000-800 BC
Length: 29.3mm, Width: 14.6mm, Thickness: 5.3mm, Weight: 10.04gms

It has clearly been subject to extensive and repeated re-sharpening over a prolonged period and now retains little of its original form. A fragment of a modified copper alloy blade from a Late Bronze Age (c.1200-1000 BC) dirk or rapier, along with part of its hilt. The blade has a lenticular cross section with a low midribe which is distinctly flattened on the top. This flares out into a triangular area at the hilt. There are flanking contractions or rivet holes at the junction between blade and the hilt, which has a thinner section and is trapezoidal in shape.
This object is likely to be a reworked rapier or dirk blade fragment which was repurposed at a later time. Without the entirety of the blade the …

A complete Bronze Age dirk blade (cf. Burgess and Gerloff's (1981) Group IV) dating to the period c. 1500 - c.1150 BC. The blade is 126.4mm in length, with roughly parallel sides, a flared base and a rounded tip. The butt is a slender trapezoidal form with two flanking rivet holes. The blade is slightly bent at either end but it is not clear whether this represents any deliberate treatment or simply post depositional damage.

Description: An intentionally broken near complete Middle Bronze Age dirk dating from c.1600-1200 cal BC. The dirk has a small break around one rivet hole in its hilt, is missing one rivet (which would have been placed in this hole) and has been intentionally broken before its burials.
The hilt of the blade is trapezoidal in plan and mostly flat in cross section. It has a slightly convex butt that would have been c.55mm wide. From this point it widens to 66.7mm wide before narrowing quickly in smooth concave arcs to the blade. It then narrows more gradually down its remaining le…

Early to Middle Bronze Age copper alloy dirk or dagger. Possibly Wessex Culture (Read 2001, 76, no 625, fig 53) belonging to Group 2 (Burgess and Gerloff, 1981) or Type Taplow of Group II, Acton Park metalwork assemblage (Burgess and Gerloff 1981, nos. 79-92). The butt is more or less flat-topped and straight sided. Two large circular rivets remain in-situ which measure 3mm in diameter with hammered flattened ends. Originally, the dirk would have had an organic hilt/handle which has probably disintegrated in the ground post-deposition. About 28mm from the butt, the blade…

A corroded and incomplete fragment of a small cast copper alloy dagger or dirk, 49.7mm in length, most likely dating to the Middle Bronze Age (c. 1500-1100 BC). The fragment comprises the base of the blade and the butt end, with two incomplete rivet holes. The cross section appears to be flat and lenticular without a clearly defined mid rib and there is no evident decoration.

A Middle Bronze Age (c 1400-1100 BC) dirk, 180mm in length. The edges of the blade taper from the butt end, are parallel along most of the blade length and then taper to a leaf-shaped point. The butt is trapezoidal with rivet holes to either side, both of which are broken, which would have secured the hilt. Both rivets are missing. The blade is lozengiform in cross section with a broad and very low central spine. The blade appears to have been intentionally bent at the mid point.

The blade is fragmentary, represented by the incomplete butt and top of the blade (with a surviving length of 61.5mm and a weight of 40.0g). The butt is of irregular trapezoidal form and is thinnest at the end (with a maximum width of 45.6mm and a minimum thickness of 2.3mm). There are no obvious rivet holes surviving on the butt although a slight recess near the centre of the top edge may possibly be the remnants of a rivet hole. A central ridge is evident just before the …
