A complete worked flint possible borer of probable Bronze Age date (c.2350-800 BC). Description: The object is broadly triangular in shape with a slightly curved ventral face. It is formed of a tertiary flake with a translucent grey colour with some darker grey areas. The proximal end has been formed into a blunt point with short, sub-parallel, abrupt retouch to both sides and there are conchoidal ripple marks on the ventral face. This end is much thinner in thickness than the distal end as about a third of the way down the length there is a ridge ac…

A complete probable flint borer, awl or scraper of probable late Neolithic to (early?) Bronze Age date (c. 3300 BC - 1000BC). It is also  It is a unifacially worked tertiary flake with no cortex remaining. There is evidence of short, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch along the dorsal margins together with invasive, stepped, semi-abrupt retouch moving toward the centre of the dorsal surface. There is also a distinct flake scar with visible ripple scars towards the proximal end of the dorsal surface. This creates a recess in the surface of the implement that could possibly have been…

A borer of probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date (c. 2800 BC - 801 BC). The object is sub-triangular in plan and is bi-convex with a broadly D-shaped cross-section. It has one flat and one convex face. The flat face features clear conchoidal ripple marks while the convex face is largely covered by cortex, making it a secondary flake. It appears that the proximal end of the dorsal face has been retouched on both margins to form a projecting point, creating a clear chisel-like edge with evidence of flake removal leading away from the working point. The borer is a sl…

A flint borer of probable Bronze Age date, c. 2350 BC - 800 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake and is a translucent light greyish-brown in colour. The upper right ventral edge has short, scaled, abrupt retouch, likewise at the ventral distal end. Longer scaled low-angle retouch is to the upper left ventral edge, forming the point. There is possible short, scaled, abrupt retouch to the middle of the right dorsal edge. The object measures 42.3mm in length, 33.4mm in max.width, 8.4mm in max.thickness and weighs 8.84g.

A flint borer of probable Bronze Age date, c. 2350 BC - 800 BC. It is formed on a flake and still retains c.75% of its light orangey-brown cortex, also visible at the edges of the ventral face. Short flake removals form a point on the dorsal face. Additional short, scaled, abrupt retouch defines the edge to one side only. At the opposite end of the flint two longitudinal and one transverse flake removal (of cortex) angle towards a shallower point without additional retouch. The flint beneath the cortex is dark grey in colour with light patination spots around the shallower point. The …

A flint borer of probable Bronze Age date, c. 2350 BC - 800 BC. It is formed from a flint pebble and still retains c.60% of its light orangey-brown cortex. Six flake removals form a worn point, four of which are angled towards the point with another two taken at right angles to the others. The flint beneath the cortex is dark grey in colour, heavily patinated in places and opaque. The object measures 59.6mm in length, 38.0mm in max.width, 23.1mm in max.thickness and weighs 55.59g.

Late Neolithic or Bronze Age flint awl or borer dating to 3300 to 1000 BC. The piece is made on a tertiary flake with a prominent bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The ripples and aris from previous removals on the dorsal face suggest the flint core was worked in at least two directions. Short semi-abrupt scalar retouch runs around the distal end and the left edge on the dorsal face. This left edge has been shaped by retouch into a distinct projecting slightly blunt ended point for boring holes in wood or hides. The piece is 21.9mm long, 24.1mm wide including the projecting poin…

An incomplete flint borer of late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age date (c. 1000 BC - 1BC). Description: The borer is sub-triangular in plan with a low flaked dorsal face and rounded convex ventral face. Much of the flaking seems incidental and not finely executed. There is limited short scaled semi abrupt retouch creating the boring point opposite the flat edge with cortex still adhering. The flint is heavily mottled dark through to light grey with some blue white where it is recorticating. The long flat edge has light brown cortex still adhering to it. Measurements: 38.57mm long, 4…

A complete knapped flint borer of probable Bronze Age date, c. 2500-1150 BC. It has been manufactured on a hard-hammer detached triangular flake of brownish black flint demonstrating infrequent yellowish inclusions. There are two arrises on the dorsal face, while the platform is plain and demonstrates no preparation. The boring portion of the tool has been formed by continuous directly applied scalar retouch along the dorsal right edge, while the dorsal left edge is unmodified with the exception of some fairly recent edge damage. Preserved in relatively fresh condition, it measures 49…

Flint borer on a secondary flake. There is about 15% cortex at the proximal end. Large bulb of percussion on the ventral and multiple flaking scars on the dorsal side. The distal end is pointed and retouched, this retouch extends a third of the way down the left side but is localised to the point on the right. The retouch on both sides is direct, semi-abrupt and has removed the creamy-grey patina that has formed over the whole of the item exposing dark grey flint underneath.

A Flint borer, probably Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, c. 3300-1000 BC. Worked from a tertiary flake of very dark brown/black flint with some grey/brown patches near proximal end. No striking platform survives, with a relatively diffuse bulb of percussion although with a bulbar scar. There are three flake removal scars on the dorsal face, all seemingly blade-like flakes, with two struck from the proximal end, both terminating in hinge fractures, and a third struck at a perpendicular angle, all three have relatively pronounced ripple marks. This last removal appears to have gone w…

A borer or piercer fabricated on a natural flake of light brown, mottled flint. The flake is sub-triangular in plan. One face is free of cortex whilst the opposing face retains a small area of light brown cortex. The flake has been extensively, but crudely worked using long, scaled, abrupt and semi-abrupt retouch. A point has been created and finished by removing two spalls from the tip downwards. This crude type of tool, utilising a natural flake, is typical of flint working during later Prehistory.

An incomplete flint borer of late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age date (c. 1000 BC - 1BC). The borer is sub-triangular in plan with three large faces and multiple striking platforms. There is extensive short scaled low angle retouch along the mesal (sides) of the main dorsal facing, with striking coming in from multiple angles. primarly from the main dorsal face on the right side and from the ventral face on the left. The point has snapped off. The primary striking platform is very flat with multiple strikings, the other striking platforms have tended only to take out a few flakes and …

Grey-buff flint with cortex possible borer. Flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal surface and a bulb on the ventral. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal side defines a low point, with an adjacent concavity on the dorsal side affording a convenient thumb rest. Pale grey flint with cortex and patches of milky white patina borer. A weathered flake with broad flakes removed from its dorsal side and a bulb and wavy surface on the ventral. The patina is removed by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect along part of one edge, and the scalar trimming of a single triangular point. This illustrates the re-use of a weathered flake of uncertain age. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 31.2mm, Width: 32.8mm, Thickness: 5.6mm, Weight: 7.34gms.
