A section of an axe head of cast copper-alloy in a shape that probably indicates a later bronze age origin. The surface is corroded but relatively smooth and covered in reddish-brown corrosion products. The surviving portion consists of the blade edge and a small amount of the body. No ridges or wings are visible. Bronze age copper alloy axe blade fragment, 27mm in length, 14mm wide and 6mm thick with a weight of 3.14g. The object is sub triangular in form and cross section and consists of a corner of a blade of a probable socketed axe. It has a slightly curved and damaged blade, 1mm thick at its tip. The fragment then widens out and is solid, but in a very damaged state. It was found in the same location as other prehistoric metal fragments (see LEIC-544574 and LEIC-54F15A) suggesting it may have been gathered for re-working?

A cast copper alloy axe or knife blank / ingot of Chalcolithic / Early Bronze Age date (2450 - 2300 BC). The blank is oval in shape with the butt being rounded narrowed and tapered. In profile it is lentoid in shape and its cross section is a similar lentoid shape. The 'cutting' edge is rounded, from the external edges it tapers gradually until it forms a narrowed but rounded but. There is no sign of a stop ridge or any form of cast design. It is rectangular in form, triangular section with one side and part of the sharpened blade surviving. A cast copper alloy fragment of a Bronze Age axe. The breaks are uneven and show signs of wear, suggesting ancient breaks. This fragment is the curved section of the blade, which is blunt. This fragment is quite un-daignostic, and so closer dating and classification is difficult. Axes begin as flat axes at the start of the Bronze Age period and then develop into palstaves and then to socketed axes. A corroded fragment of a possible small cast socketed axehead of probable Late Bronze Age date (1150-800 BC). The fragment tapers in section at a broadly 45 degee angle to the tip, with both top and bottom surfaces flat and corroded but with possibly complete vertical edges. A fragment of a cast copper alloy casting or smelting waste, probably dating from the Middle or Late Bronze Age, i.e. c. 2000-800BC. It is likely that this is a fragment of a cu-alloy 'cake', ie the cu-alloy residue left over from the smelting process. This would then be broken into smaller pieces that various different artefacts can be cast from. Cake fragments such as this are a rare find for North West England. They are much more common in East Anglia as both single finds and in Late Bronze Age metalwork hoards. Dimensions: length: 27mm, width:13mm, thickness: 22mm amd weight: 19.4g.
