Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North East Lincolnshire

Brown flint with cortex, and with a spot of re-formed cortex, debitage. A small thick flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a platform at one end of its bulbar ventral surface – where cortex had re-formed. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight edge, suggesting a short period of probably improvised use, perhaps of an older flake. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 Length: 27.2mm, Width: 24.5mm, Thickness: 8.9mm, Weight: 5.56gms

Dark grey flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, scraper. A thick leaf-shaped flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a concave ventral surface with a bulb at one end. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trims sandy brown cortex to form a small crescentic hollow on one edge. The initial working and retouch both appear perfunctory. Dark grey flint, possibly collected from the East coast, scraper fragment. A small thick flake with a bulbar ventral surface, possibly recently chipped. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trims a sandy brown patina from along a curving working edge, which has probably been truncated by breakage. Brown flint with re-formed cortex, thumbnail scraper. Small thick flake with broad flake struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface; invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curving edge opposite the striking platform. The lack of subsequent patina may hint that the object was subsequently incorporated into a sealed context. Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper alloy (bronze) casting waste of uncertain date; most probably Mid - Late Bronze Age (1500-700 BC). However, due to the lack of context and the continuation of casting styles this artefact could be dated from Bronze Age - Roman period (c. 1500 BC - 450 AD). This fragment is from the neck (funnel / well) of a composite probably two part mould. The casting waste is conical; being oval in plan and D shaped in cross section. In profile the edges of the waste taper relatively evenly. The base of the casting waste is irregular with the remains of two runners / casting jets being prese…

Dark grey-brown flint debitage. A battered ovoid flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface. Grey flint with re-formed cortex spot, scraper. Rounded thick flake with broad flakes trimmed from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface. Grey flint with thick re-formed cortex, probable scraper. Small thick irregular chunk with a smooth ?dorsal side and a flat ?ventral surface where cortex has re-formed. Milky patina extends over part of the dorsal side, suggesting its exposure to a calcareous environment. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trims part of this patina along a curved edge opposite a flat thick butt, while the opposite longer edge bears two smoothed zones perhaps arising from a hinge fracture. Pale grey-buff semi-translucent flint, barbed and tanged arrowhead. A small triangular point with basal hollows between its tang and the flanking barbs [one lost]. Opaque pale grey flint scraper. A large flake with broad and narrower flakes removed by unidirectional working and with a working edge formed by a very few angled drafts, with a bulb and platform at the narrower butt end of the ventral surface. The narrow end was subsequently battered. A V-shaped notch in one side, occasioned by an angled impact delivered from the ventral aspect, is probably recent adventitious damage.
