Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy socketed axehead retaining fragments of a wooden haft. Cast axehead with a rounded socket mouth, straighter on one side on the inner side of the aperture, with a moulded lip; a second shallower moulding passes round the axehead where it aligns with the springing of a single loop of length 21mm. Mould lines pass from the socket moulding to near a curved cutting edge along the upper and lower sides. The cutting edge is markedly abraded with the loss of all the sharpened edge. Three slivers of wood of length c.60mm, now of angular sections and one with a limited copper-stain…

County: North Lincolnshire

Copper alloy axe head fragment. Cast flax axe fragment, comprising a broken proximal end which is of rectangular section where broken, expanded to form the blade which is chamfered or bevelled from 15mm behind the crescentic cutting edge. The objects is abraded overall, with extensive joining patches of pale green corrosion on its sides, and with abrasion and corrosion entirely covering the crescentic cutting edge which is accordingly blunt and rough and the upper and lower sides as well as the broken end, which is stained brown from sandy local soils. The broken inner end of the axe w…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Gold metalworking debris or ingot fragment. An irregularly sub-rectangular fragment of cast gold which has been hammered flat, with one slightly concave edge, all other sides are broken with a crystalline appearance. Reported as from the same location as a socketed axe dated to 1000-800 BC. As one of two items of similar date and recovered from the same find spot, this object technically fulfills criteria for a 'hoard' of two or more metal prehistoric objects found together, and is therefore to be submitted to the Treasure process, ref. 2022 T357. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000…

County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy socketed axe head. Cast socketed axe head with a single oval loop of length 20.5mm and width 11.6mm adjacent to the rounded moulding surrounding a socket mouth measuring 25.4mm by 26.5mm; the socket is 65mm deep. A low secondary moulding of width 5mm around the socket mouth appears on the sides and beside the loop, though its definition is lost on that side opposite the loop. An external mould line passes from the socket mouth along the upper and lower sides of the axe head as far as the ends of a crescentic cutting edge to its expanded blade. The sides of the axe are pla…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint scraper. A triangular section chip from a flint rod, probably a fragment of Neolithic debitage which has acquired a white patina from exposure to a calcareous environment. The patina was subsequently removed by invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect to form a small thumbnail scraper; its flat butt was formed by previous breakage in antiquity. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 19.9mm, Width: 18mm, Thickness: 6.7mm, Weight: 3.11gms

Grey flint scraper. A small thumbnail scraper with covering angled scalar retouch across its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface. The broad butt – probably the striking platform – bears short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect, perhaps to enable pressure to be brought to bear on the working edge opposite. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 17.4mm, Width: 19.7mm, Thickness: 7.4mm, Weight: 2.72gms

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cream coloured flint barbed and tanged arrowhead. A lentoid section arrowhead bearing covering angled scalar retouch across both sides, with one of its barbs lost to an ancient break. This large heavy example was probably designed as a hunting arrowhead whose broad cutting edge would maximise tissue damage and blood loss to the quarry, both slowing it and enabling it to be trailed by hounds. The patina indicates the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC Length: 45.3mm, Width: 29.2mm, Thickness: 6.5mm, Wei…
