Grey flint with cortex, scraper. A thick flake with broad flakes and cortex removed from the dorsal side by hard hammer strike and with a concave ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a straight edge; an adjacent edge is battered so this working may have been more extensive than what remains. Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy chisel, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast narrow rectangular section bar with a thinned and worn working end; probably broken in antiquity at the other end. The working end is very slightly expanded [by c.0.5mm]. The object closely resembles a simple Later Bronze Age chisel from Plymstock, Devon (Evans, J. 1881, Ancient Bronze Implements of Great Britain, Longmans, Green & Co., London, pages 165-166, fig. 190). The use of the tool appears to have caused a very slight flexion or bending of its lower end. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000-800 BC.

County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Grey flint with cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, probable knife. Thick flake with two broad flakes removed from its ventral side by hard hammer strike. A period sufficient for the struck surfaces to acquire a yellowish iron-stained cast ensued. This light discolouration was removed along one long edge by short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect. The Early Bronze Age could accommodate both primary and secondary episodes. Other damage appears adventitious and recent. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC.

Brown flint with cortex spot possible fabricator. A long thick flake with two broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly convex ventral surface, overall of lentoid or lightly biconvex section. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows part of one long edge; the other bears adventitious impact damage. The ventral surface appears worn. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC.

Object type: SWORD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy sword fragment. A short fragment from a leaf-shaped sword blade of lentoid section with faint grooves on either side running parallel to the two cutting edges. The edges converge, suggesting this fragment to come from near the mid-part of the blade. The development of swords designed for a slashing action is attributed to the later Bronze Age. The broken edge at one end of the fragment is worn [bottom], but the opposite edge [top] is rough and may suggest a larger sword fragment has been further fragmented in recent times. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000-800 BC.

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible axe head fragment. Fragment from the cutting edge of a copper alloy axe; what remains has a straight edge with broken corners and a marked V section. Polished by wear or use. This is most likely to come from towards one side of the blade, as the midpart of a socketed axe blade would usually exhibit marked curvature. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000-800 BC.

Brown flint scraper. Oval flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side and a bulb on the ventral. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge, retaining the striking platform as a butt. The object is chipped and entirely crazed by intense heat; the finder notes this could have arisen from recent stubble burning as easily as through events in antiquity. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC.

Grey flint with cortex spot, scraper. Thick flake with broad flakes removed from its dorsal side leaving a slightly convex surface, and with a more markedly bulbar ventral surface. Hard hammer strike executed from the ventral aspect has reduced the width of the flake. Long to invasive scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the end and the adjacent sides. Grey flint scraper. A tiny thumbnail scraper. The dorsal side has had a flake removed while the ventral surface is flat; very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved edge. A further small flake was trimmed from the ventral surface. Misty patina, more prominent on the ventral surface, suggests the object was exposed to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Flint scraper. Discoid scraper with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer strike and with a lightly bulbar ventral surface; the striking platform serves as a butt. Long angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge. A dense creamy patina spotted with iron suggests the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment with gravel after its deposition. Pale grey flint scraper. A thick flake with a large flake struck from its dorsal side and with an undulating ventral surface. Abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curving edge, with localised evidence for battering after this operation. The object has acquired a patchy patina from exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition and iron staining from soil or gravel with a ferruginous content. The latter feature is sometimes associated with Palaeolithic material. Suggested date: Bronze Age, 2350-800 BC.

Black and grey flint with cortex, scraper. Thick flake with broad flakes trimmed from its dorsal side in two episodes, sufficiently removed in time from each other for recortification to have occurred before the secondary working, and with an angular broken or hackled ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect appears to have followed a long edge, though conchoidal scars along this edge appear to have been caused by impacts along to that edge rather than working. Grey flint with cortex strip, scraper. Thick oval flake with broad flakes removed from its dorsal surface, which is ridged with a longitudinal positive hinged fracture, and with a bulbar ventral surface and a broad striking platform. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved end. One side is battered. A misty patina suggests the object was exposed for a relatively short period to a calcareous environment after its deposition. This is disrupted by minor episodes of fortuitous later damage. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC.

Grey flint with cortex spot, possible debitage. Thick flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by multi-directional angled hard hammer working. The ventral surface is rippled and slightly concave. This might represent an abortive attempt to make a tool such as a fabricator or a plano-convex knife. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC.

Dark grey flint with cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, scraper fragment. Thick flake with invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following one end and side and with a slightly concave ventral surface. Part of the scraper is lost, with either battering or crystaline heat damage along the broken edge. The working edge of the scraper is also battered. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC.

Flint scraper. Rounded thick flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulb on the ventral. Short angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curving edge; battering appears near the bulb, an area probably serving as a pointed butt. Thick milky patina suggests the object endured long exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC.
