Pale brown toffee-coloured flint with pale cream markings, knife, as kindly identified by the finder. Oval flake with two broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trims one narrower end and probably the adjoining long side. Suggested date: possibly Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC Length: 51.5mm, Width: 33.7mm, Thickness: 10.7mm, Weight: 15.85gms

Grey flint knife, as kindly identified by the finder. A thick oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulbar ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch follows a curving edge; a chip was probably damage incurred in antiquity as orange staining from contact with gravels passes over the broken surface. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC Length: 42.5mm, Width: 38.4mm, Thickness: 14.4mm, Weight: 18.06gms

Grey flint with cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, probable knife. Thick flake with two broad flakes removed from its ventral side by hard hammer strike. A period sufficient for the struck surfaces to acquire a yellowish iron-stained cast ensued. This light discolouration was removed along one long edge by short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect. The Early Bronze Age could accommodate both primary and secondary episodes. Other damage appears adventitious and recent. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 77mm, Width: 38.7mm, Thickness: 15…

Grey-buff flint knife. Oval flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its [probably] dorsal side, and with angled covering scalar retouch across its [probably] ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one side of a rounded end. Patches of misty patina on struck surfaces suggest the object was exposed to a calcareous environment for a relatively short period after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 49.5mm, Width: 28.7mm, Thickness: 8.3mm, Weight: 11.78gms

Dark grey flint with cortex knife. Thick flake with broad flat flakes struck from its dorsal side and with an uneven ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight edge. The relict cortex probably facilitated the exertion of pressure on the cutting edge. Misty patina suggests a period of exposure to a calcareous environment after deposition. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 45.5mm, Width: 29.8mm, Thickness: 14.5mm, Weight: 15.76gms

Grey flint knife. Flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by multi-directional hard hammer working, and with a hinged fracture marking its separation from the core. Further broad parallel flakes were then removed from the ventral surface. Short scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved edge to form a cutting edge. The smooth hinged fracture may have facilitated the exertion of pressure when using the knife. It is possible a more symmetrical lunate form is disrupted by the loss of part of the cutting edge. Mottled grey and buff flint of poor quality; possible knife; the finder kindly suggests this may be a razor. A long flake from which long parallel flakes have been removed from the dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface. The result has been to form a putative curved cutting edge at the end of a long tang with a flat back along the opposite edge which might permit pressure to be brought to bear. The unusual form arises from an unpromising material prone to splitting along its numerous internal planes, and it would have been difficult to replicate the form of this object. Suggested…

Grey flint with cortex, knife fragment. About half of a lunate flake with cortex trimmed in a broad flake from the dorsal surface; the ventral surface is near-flat and faintly rippled. Short to invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge; the loss of about half the object is presumed. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Grey flint knife. Narrow flake with a long flake struck from its dorsal side and with a flat and slightly rippled ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge and round the wider end with shorter abrupt retouch following the opposite long edge and carried up to the other, slightly narrower, end; this side is battered. The retouch approached the production of a plano-convex section though the slight hollowing of the upper or dorsal surface would improve grip while the abrupt retouch may have permitted pressure to be brought to be…

Grey flint knife. A thick flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulbar ventral surface. Long angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge. The other side of the same edge is trimmed by short scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect, with similar working along part of the opposite edge. The lack of patina may suggest the object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Grey flint with cortex, knife. Flake with a bulb on the ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trims a patch of cortex, leaving a neat crescentic edge between the unworked and worked parts. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect may represent either the finishing of the cutting edge or its renewal. Narrow chips have also been removed by retouch or adventitious damage falling on the edge of the ventral surface opposite the cutting edge, perhaps to assist handling. Patches of misty patina on struck surfaces suggest a period of exposure …

Grey flint with cortex possibly collected from the East Coast, knife. Flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface. Dense milky patina on struck surfaces suggests a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. The patina is interrupted by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following part of one long edge, suggesting the reuse of an old struck flake. Dark grey flint with cortex knife. A sub-triangular flake with what may be either a fortuitous chip or angled scalar trimming of cortex from its dorsal side and with ripples on its ventral surface. The exposed flint in both cases has acquired a dense white patina. This is disrupted by short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect following one long edge, and by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following an adjacent short edge. The former working may define a cutting edge while the latter may represent the tidying or blunting of a short side of the tool…

Dark grey flint knife. Triangular flake with broad parallel flakes trimmed from its dorsal side and trimmed by multangular angled hard hammer working on the ventral. One long edge is lightly battered, presumably from use, while the opposite long edge is flat, affording a finger or thumb rest. The trimming of both sides was so economically executed as to give the appearance more usually associated with covering scalar retouch, while the resemblance to the form of a projectile point is probably misleading. Thick white patina has accumulated overall, and its loss at edges is the result o…

Thick flake with broad flakes trimmed from both its dorsal and ventral surfaces by angled hard hammer working, and with short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect following a long curving edge. The opposite edge is battered, possibly to afford a thumb rest when the knife was in use, supplementing a conve4nient hollow arising from the initial working.
