Record ID: NLM-15CFB4
Object type: PIN
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper alloy Bronze Age Quoit headed pin. The ring is oval but is slightly pointed where it joins the circular-sectioned pin shaft. It has an ‘H’ section which measures c. 5.0mm x 2.3mm and blends smoothly into the pin. This ‘H’ section appears to have been formed by hammering the edges of the ring section to raise them into the flanges. These flanges are decorated with notches on both sides of the ring. The slightly bent shaft is now about 45° off the plain of the ring. The length is 144.0mm, the diameter of the ring is 66.1mm x 60.0mm and the weight is 29.11g.

Brown flint with cortex, and heavy patina on one side. Debitage. Struck flint bearing four or more conchoidal fractures from removal of flakes with a hard hammer, an operation which post-dated the accumulation of a heavy patina on one unworked face. Dark grey (outer) and pale brown (inner) flint with cortex Possible scraper. A sub-triangular flint chip with hard hammer retouch along one edge and (probably) on the striking platform. Copper alloy This object was originally suggested to be a possible Mount, from furniture or a box of Roman date. Peter Reavill kindly offers an alternative identification of the object as a casting well with runners from an episode of metalworking dating from between Later Prehistory (circa 1500 BC) to the end of the Roman period. The object was described as follows: Cast oval plano-convex object with a pair of angled lugs projecting from its upper surface. Other surface irregularities may represent further elements of a decorative scheme, though the abraded and knobbly surface …
