Record ID: NLM-2FBA1F
Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy socketed axehead fragment. The cutting edge and the associated outer part of a socketed axe, with scant inswing discernible from the cutting edge to the upper and lower sides. Robustly cleaned by the finder, possibly resulting in the rounding of fracture surfaces and the blunting of the blade itself. The identification is suggested by the cavity behind the cutting edge and between the sides of the fragment. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000-800 BC. Height: 34.2mm, Length: 24mm, Weight: 24.41gms

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy axehead. Solid cast flat axehead, expanded at its crescentic cutting edge, and tapered gently to a flat butt. The upper and lower sides are effectively flat, though rounded at their arises. The object has probably been robustly cleaned by the finder. The form is typologically early, but the yellow tint of metal shows this is not a pure copper casting as might be the case with the earliest axes, but a bronze or other copper alloy. Suggested date: Early to Middle Bronze Age, 2000-1600 BC Length: 50.4mm, Width: 30.0mm, Thickness (at butt): 10.7mm, Weight: 64.85gms

Copper alloy possible socketed axe fragment. Possibly a fragment from the mouth of a socketed axe; if so, subsequently partly melted in the course of recycling. Presented together with other unburnt socketed axe fragments, ingots and metalworking debris. If from the same find-spot, these might comprise scrap from a metalworkers hoard, and as such would constitute Treasure under the 1996 Act. However, it is uncertain whether their presentation together signals their identical find-spot, or an origin from among less interesting objects and scrap from a wider area. Suggested date: Late B…

Copper alloy socketed axehead fragment. Cast fragment from the ribbed side of a probably square socket, part of a socketed axehead. A further vertical rib appears next to the socket mouth. Broken on all other sides. Presented together with other fragments which, if from the same location, would qualify as a hoard under the Treasure Act. Toffee-coloured brown flint with cortex, possible lithic implement. Long angled retouch executed from the dorsal aspect produced a curved surface at one end, and a negative hinge fracture on the dorsal side also provides a thumb rest which would permit pressure to be exerted on either end of the putative tool. The object tapers towards a thinner curved end, with casually executed flake removal at the mid point affording a grip for the thumb; the other end is flat, at a recent break. The upper and lower convex surfaces are lightly smoothed, probably by wear during use, though other flaking at the edges represents post-depositional damage.
