Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint with cortex, scraper. A small thick chunk with broad flakes removed from its dorsal side by hard hammer strike and with a flat ventral surface. The thickest end of the chunk has received short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, producing a broad working face which was subsequently lightly battered. A dense creamy patina overall suggests the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 38.6mm, Width: 35.7mm, Thickness: 21.2mm, Weight: 30.65gms

Copper alloy axe head fragment. A tiny chip from the end of the cutting edge of a cast axe head, possibly parted from its matrix at the site of a casting flaw. The cutting edge was crescentic with abrupt ends, though too little remains to firmly ascribe this scrap to a particular type. Suggested date: Middle to Late Bronze Age, 1600-800 BC. Grey flint possible arrowhead fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. A thin flake fragment with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a rippled ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows two converging edges. A straight edge opposite the longest of these is lost to a recent break. The surface bears a pale grey patina suggesting the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. If indeed an arrowhead, the triangular form suspected would ally this to Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age artefacts. Suggested date…

The cutting edges of the blade appear lightly bevelled by sharpening, and the extreme point of the tip is lost. Grey-brown flint plano-convex knife. Blue-grey flint possible scraper. A thick flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer, and with a prominent bulb on its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved edge. Misty patina has developed over the struck surfaces, suggesting a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This is disrupted along part of the edge, possibly by battering or reuse of a discarded tool. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a tortoise scraper.
