A fragment of gold, likely hack gold from a penannular bracelet of Bronze Age date, possibly c.1100-850 BC. Description: The object is broadly 'axe-shaped' with a sub-circular terminal that tapers to a flat rectangular cross section. This was likely achieved by cutting and hammering. The tapered end has been cut, indicated by a bright rugged cut. The terminal also appears to have been cut from a larger object and then hammered smooth. The gold has a rich, bright yellow colour.  Measurements: Length: 14.77 mm; Width: 7.03 mm; Thickness: 6.43 …

A single fragment of gold ‘bar’ of probable prehistoric date. Description: It is snipped (in a pincer-like or ‘chisel-cut’ way) on either end. The object has a sub-hexagonal cross-section. Dimensions: Length: 18mm; Width: 6mm; Thickness: 4.5mm; Weight: 4.32g Metal composition: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of a gold bar fragment by the British Museum, indicated a surface composition of approximately 81-83% gold, 14-16% silver, the rest being largely copper. See appended report. Discussion: This fragment is similar in appearance – and, perhap…

A complete copper-alloy ingot of probable late bronze age date, c. 1150 - 600BC. Description:The ingot is a plano-convex discoid shape possibly suggesting the production in a bowl furnace rather than a mould. The upper is flat but with a large knop or swelling relating to the casting gate used in its production. The bottom is a rounded convex shape. The ingot is heavily pitted likely due to a mix of impurities in its matrix and the uneven natural material used to create the bowl in which it was cast. Measurements:121mm in diameter, 41.49mm thick and 1,225g in weight Discuss…

A large fragment of Bronze Age copper alloy plano-convex ingot edge fragment of Middle to Late Bronze Age date c.1200-700 BC. This fragment of ingot is almost semi-circular, with one distinctly curved edge and is sub-triangular in cross-section. When complete the ingot would have been 'bun-shaped', having a domed upper surface and a flat lower surface. The surfaces of the ingot are abraded and pitted. The fragment is124.4 mm in length, 73.3 mm wide,35.6 mm thick and weighs 980.0 g.

9 copper alloy Bun Ingots. Together with the ingots subject of Treasure Case 2007 T144 these ingots presumably represent discrete hoards, and can be added to the significant concentration of Late Bronze Age 'Carp's Tongue' metalwork hoards already recorded around the Isle of Thanet and the Wantsum Channel (Lawson 1995, 277). Other discoveries from Thanet are summarised by Perkins (1991, 259-61) and, more recently, by Andrews et al. (2009, 76 fig. 2.8). Many of the Thanet hoards contain ingots, which provide evidence for an efficient industry that was recycling scrap metal, probabl…

Small, cast gold 'finger-ingot', roughly plano-convex in section. Cut marks are visible (possibly done with a chisel in antiquity). Comparable pieces were found in a hoard from Mooghaun, County Clare, Ireland, where other items are datable to the Late Bronze Age. This example is probably of a similar date.

Individual ingot details as follows: 5. Plano-convex edge fragment (Th: 23.25mm, Wt: ???g). 6. Plano-conves edge fragment (Th: 25.32mm, Wt: ???g). 7. …

Hoard of metalwork debris, consisting of twelve fragments of cast copper ingot or cake and two fragments of copper alloy slag or casting waste. These pieces were found dispersed in plough soil within close proximity of each other, and clearly represent a small hoard of Late Bronze Age metalworking material. Th: 24.12mm Wt: 191.86g 2. Copper…
