County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worked ground and polished axehead, of a black hue, of probable Bronze Age date. Found with items possibly of the Bronze Age period, but its dating in relation to these finds could not be verified, as it was an historical find, once part of the Zennor Wayside museum's collections, and so, its exact geospatial provenance is unknown. The axehead is rectangular in shape with a ground flat bladed edge. The sides have been ground and polished flat and smooth. It appears a lot of effort has been applied in the production of this tool. The end has been rounded o…

Stone polisher, as kindly identified by the finder. A sub-spherical water-rolled pebble with a pale grey surface and smooth overall, with a restricted very smooth zone of length 27mm. The use of such objects as craft tools is likely until the end of the early medieval period, though the finder opines the find-spot to be especially productive of material dated to the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age. Suggested date: possibly Bronze Age, 2350-800 BC. Length: 45.7mm, Width: 41.8mm, Thickness: 29.6mm, Weight: 77.01gms

An incomplete stone whetstone possibly of Bronze Age date. The whetstone is made from a fine-grained grey stone. It is rectangular-sectioned with with worn broadly rounded terminals. The piece is heavily worn.   It is extremely difficult to date whetstones accurately without any supporting contextual evidence. This object was found in an area of known Bronze Age activity, a similar date therefore cannot be ruled out.

Sandstone burnt stone. One half of a river-rounded Sandstone cobble, possibly flattened by use as a rubber or hone on one side, reddened by heat which has promoted splitting on the putative flat or polished side. The use of stones to heat water – for what purpose is the topic of speculation, ranging from cooking to bathing of the better sort – is especially characteristic of the later Bronze Age. Of course, stones could be heated or incorporated into hearths and campfires  and water boiled at any later date as well. Suggested date: possibly Late Bronze Age to Iron Age,…

Approximately half of an Early Bronze Age "cushion" type stone mace head, c.2350-1501 BC. This mace eas broken transversely in antiquity though the hourglass perforation, this was worked from both faces with a pecking stone and a pointed borer until they met in the middle, creating the distinctive profile of the shaft hole. The stone appears to be Dolerite, of fine grained grey/green composition, with the original surfaces (including the breaks) now patinated with iron oxides. This type of stone is a semi-common find as water-worn pebbles on Norfolk beaches and rivers as a …
