Bone point made from the proximal half of the right metatarsal (hind leg bone) of an adult bovid (i.e. a cow, bull etc). The bone has been split about halfway down the shaft (diaphysis) and shaped into a point. There are clear signs of cutting and scraping of the bone to shape it on all sides, and the front has been cut at a sharper angle to form the point. The pointed end has acquired a gloss, probably through a combination of handling and use. The tip has a facet cut across at a slight angle; the facet is smooth, and was possibly caused by impact and then subsequent handling/use.…

Object type: RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unusual and incomplete ring of unknown date. It is made of a light material, probably bone or antler, or possibly shale as it is very dark in colour. The ring is D-shaped in section, being flat inside. The outside edge has been worked to give diagonal ribs extending from one edge to the other. Approximately half the ring has a layer consisting of over half the depth of the ring, 'shaved' off it. The structure below this is similar to bone. It is 28.5mm in diameter (internal 16.5mm), 8.5mm thick and weighs 2.12g. Because of the slightly crude workmanship and choice of material, a pre…

A fragment from near the tip of a polished bone dagger similar to other Suffolk examples, see Beck Row, SMR reference number MNL 145, Worlington, reference number WGN 008. This and previous examples are most likely to be Bronze Age in date. This fragment consits of a split and sharpened bone with part of the circular marrow core surviving. It is plano-convex in cross-section and there are old breaks near th tip and roughly mid-blade. The surviving fragment shows numerous sharpening and abrasive linear marks and facets. There is also a slight split visible along the length of…

Large bone 'awl' type implement with angled cut across stem and drilled vertical longitudinal perforation (enlarging the natural perforation) at the 'haft' end. The point is made from bovine metatarus- back foot bone. It measures 126mm in length and 43mm in width. There are extensive longitudinal and part diagonal grooving probably resulting from use wear. The tip is rounded and polished. The flat butt end of the bone displaying slight small irregular 'block' with cracking, possibly relating from burning, this is not evident anywhere else. The bone is in good condition and medium…
