Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment from a possible axe or palstave of Bronze Age date. Only part of the blade end survives, the remainder of the object is missing due to old breaks, now worn.

Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Published
Crushed and distorted gold lock ring. Triangular in section, the ring has one plain sheet gold face and two faces comprising twisted gold wires probably joined by soldering (see scientific report). The sheet gold is folded at the terminals to form the side-plates. The ring is hollow.
Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the wire lock ring by the British Museum's Scientific Research section indicated a surface composition for the sheet gold face of approximately 86% gold, 11% silver and 3% copper. The sheet gold is folded at its ends to form the triangular e…

A fragment of an ingot or, perhaps more likely, an incomplete piece of goldwork from the production process. Half of the fragment has been hammered into a bar with a relatively regular square cross-section. The end appears to have been cut. The remainder of the fragment has not been as highly worked and is a relatively irregular sub-rectangular shape that tapers away to a thinner cross-section. It is not clear whether this end has been cut or whether it has broken.
The more highly worked end of the fragment can be compared with a fragment with rectangular profile from Chalvington w…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed axe of Bronze Age date. Only the blade and and part of the socket survive, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The Fragment is rectangular in form, triangular in section, tapering to the flaring cutting edge. This is crescentic in form and extremely worn due to post-depositional corrosion. The end of the sub-oval shaped socket is visible at the old breaks, but the precise form of the axe remains uncertain due to old breaks. All surfaces have extensive pale green copper-alloy corrosion and have lost their original patinated surfaces. It…

Treasure case 2010 T509; Bronze Age metalwork hoard with associated pottery from the Burnham-on-Crouch area.
Method of discovery: metal detector / archaeological investigation. Items at all stages of discovery by four finders were reported to the Essex FLO. Upon discovery of an insitu pottery vessel, metal detecting ceased, and the finders contacted the Essex FLO to organise an archaeological excavation to recover and identify any remaining insitu items. The excavation included the block lifting of a damaged pottery vessel, containing further metalwork. Excavation was carried out b…

Copper alloy axehead dating from the end of the early Bronze Age period, c. 1900-1700 BC. The axe is a Schmidt and Burgess (1981, pg. 65-8; pl. 30-1) Type Bandon, Variant Swinton, e.g. nos. 347-80. The surface of the axe is corroded and worn and appears to be displaying active copper corrosion, rendering identification of the surface, and any possible decoration, impossible.
The axe measures 84mm in length, 34mm in width and 11mm in thickness. It weighs 78.94g. Such axes were current in the Willerby Wold phase of the early Bronze Age, currently dated circa 1900-1700 BC.

An almost complete lithic dagger dating to the Bronze Age. The dagger is broadly oval in plan with a pointed end, thickened middle and narrow terminal. The terminal appears to have suffered a blunt break. The flint is a light mottled grey, with a creamy white patination covering c. 90% of the dorsal face and c. 25% of the ventral face. Less than 5% of cortex remains, located at the tip of the dagger. The bulb of percussion is pronounced. An almost complete cast copper alloy socketed axehead of late Bronze Age date. It is broadly rectangular in plan, flaring in width towards the crescentic and enclosed cutting edge. At the other end to the cutting edge the socket is open and square in plan which extends almost to the cutting edge. This gives the axehead a triangular profile. The mouth of the socket has moulded double transverse ribs, the upper of the two being more prominent and forming the upper edge of the socket. Each side of the outer edge has a vertical casting seam, with a small and integrally cast D-shaped side …

Possible Bronze Age copper alloy chisel. The object is flat and rectangular in plan. The upper end has suffered an old break and is very worn. The fragment is ovoid in section towards the break and expands slightly in width at the centre. From this expansion, the lower section is triangular in section and tapers to a point which is rounded in plan. The sides of the lower section are slightly thicker than the flattened central area, possibly indicating that the edges had raised sides which are now worn to almost the same thickness as the rest of the fragment. It has a light green patin…

Arreton Types date to metalworking stage VI, which corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 4 circa 1750-1550 BC. The fragment is from the butt end of the axehead. The break is old and worn. The terminal has rounded corners and measures 21.98mm in width and is 2.60mm thick. Flanges are present on both sides of the object. Overall, the surface of the fragment has a mid green…

A late Bronze Age copper alloy fragment from a spear dating c. 1150 - 700BC. This fragment comprises the tip of the spear head. It has a large, rounded midrib which extends to the tip.
