A complete copper-alloy spiral ring of probable Bronze Age to Roman date, c.1500 BC – AD 300. The object is formed of a circular sectioned rod of metal with cut ends. The ring has one coil and is undecorated. The metal has a mid-green patina and is in fair condition. The ring is 25.4mm long, 24.4mm wide, 3.7mm thick and weighs 4.8g. Some rings of this type appear to be made from reused fragments of metal and a few are far too big to have been worn on the finger. It has therefore been suggested that they could have been used as hair ornaments or as…

An incomplete copper alloy spearhead of Middle to Late Bronze Age date, c. 1550 – 800 BC. Only the tip of the spear remains which is triangular in plan and lozenge in section with slight raised mid-ribs. The tip of the hollow socket can be seen though is filled with soil. An insufficient portion of the spear remains to prove diagnostic, therefore a specific type cannot be attributed, though it is probably comparable with the range of spearheads in Davis Groups 6-11. A fragment of a copper alloy socketed axehead of late Bronze Age date, c. 1000-800 BC. The fragment is the blade end which is trapezoidal in shape with a worn cutting edge and flared rounded corners. The cross-section is rectangular and the breaks are old and worn. The metal has a dark brownish-green patina and is worn. The fragment is 56.29mm long, 29.54mm wide, 12.84mm thick and weighs 53.45g. Due to the incomplete nature of the axehead it is not possible to ascribe it to a particular type series and it has therefore been dated broadly to the late Bronze Age period, c. 1000 - 800BC.

TREASURE CASE : 2023 T312 A complete gold plated pennannular ring dating to the Bronze Age, c. 1000-800 BC. Description: A complete penannular ring, circular in cross section, with corrosion between the terminals. The corrosion likely indicates that it was made by covering a circular copper-alloy bar with gold sheet and hammering it flat, giving it the appearance of being made from solid gold. The ring was decorated with silver or silver rich gold wire, which covers the ring in a continuous spiral that provides a striped effect. Overall, it is in fairly good condition, but there are…

Copper alloy socketed axehead fragment. The cutting edge and the associated outer part of a socketed axe, with scant inswing discernible from the cutting edge to the upper and lower sides. Copper alloy axehead. Solid cast flat axehead, expanded at its crescentic cutting edge, and tapered gently to a flat butt. The upper and lower sides are effectively flat, though rounded at their arises. The object has probably been robustly cleaned by the finder. The form is typologically early, but the yellow tint of metal shows this is not a pure copper casting as might be the case with the earliest axes, but a bronze or other copper alloy. Suggested date: Early to Middle Bronze Age, 2000-1600 BC Length: 50.4mm, Width: 30.0mm, Thickness (at butt): 10.7mm, Weight: 64.85gms
