Copper alloy wedge. Cast rectangular section wedge, tapered towards its thinner broken end and with traces of hammering at its broad end which has left it slightly burred. A hole of diameter 3.3mm is drilled through the broad end and a short narrow cut extends vertically from this hole on either side, perhaps suggesting provision for its suspension on a thin cord. The crisp arises point to a recent date. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950 Length: 56.5mm, Width: 18mm, Thickness: 7.7mm, Weight: 29.64gms

A complete probably Post Medieval iron wedge, dating to c AD 1550 - 1800. It is square headed , the surface of the head slightly convex, angled downwards. In profile it is sub rectangular with the slope of the head at one end of its shaft, and a U shape at the other. On one side of this profile there is a step where the thickness of the shaft suddenly narrows, perhaps as a result of its tight fit with another object.  On the other plain, the shaft tapers from the head to become almost flat with a sharp edge at the base. Wedges like these were hammered into the sockets of…

A small, wedge-shaped object. This object has a square head and tapers to a blunted point. This object has no tang or broken section where a tang would have been, making it unlikely to have had a handle like a carpentry or masonry chisel. It is possible that this was a wedge used to prevent small cogs from moving.

Lead axe-shaped wedge, possibly a miniature votive axe of uncertain date, possibly Bronze Age to Roman The axe-shaped object has been hammer-shaped and is complete (with a length of 28.7mm and weight of 8.1g). The butt is thickened and of rectangular section (8.4mm wide and 5.2mm thick). The sides are straight and divergent before flaring to the expanded blade edge (with a blade width of 16.6mm and a thickness of 0.8mm). The faces are somewhat irregular but generally flat and gradually convergent from the butt to the blade. There is no applied decoration to the object. The w…

A small iron object, probably a near complete wedge dating to the Roman period. It is rectangular in section, with a slightly ?burred butt, flattening to a corroded and broken chisel-like tip. It may be chisel tip fragment, but the potential burring to the butt indicates that it was a small wedge. A wedge of this size may have been used for splitting timbers. Measurements: L (53) mm ; W (butt) 26 mm ; T (butt) 12 mm ; W (tip) 25 mm ; Wt 57 g ;

Iron wedge. A wrought iron blade approaching hourglass form, with a broad curved cutting edge, a constriction a little above its midpoint where the profile is slightly thickened, and a flat narrower butt. One side of the blade is thicker towards the cutting edge, with a sharp stepped edge to the thickened part. The straight edge opposite the cutting edge is burred by recurrent impact from the use of the object. This appears to be a tool for cutting wood, possibly in thin slices as with the manufacture of roof shingles, whose manufacture would involve a blade and mallet. The finder kin…

An iron axehead or more likely a woodworking tool such as a wedge. The piece is trapezoid in plan and rectangular in section, tapering to the blade edge. However, there is no clear area where the wooden handle would have been attached, and the 'handle-end' is flat which might suggest it was used as a woodworking wedge. Moreover, the metal at the flat-end is rolled over in places towards the blade-end, which would be consistent with the item being struck for use as a wedge. The object is corroded. The date of the item is uncertain, but post-medieval is possible. The height of the…

Iron possible wedge. A rectangular section tapered bar of triangular profile, with its narrow end worn at a slight angle. The considerable mass may suggest good survival of a metal core to the object, despite surface corrosion. It is perhaps more likely to have been a tool used, perhaps for splitting timber, than a detached part from of farm machinery. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1900. A complete iron wedge of probable Post-Medieval date. The wedge is sub-rectangular in plan and section, widening slightly to the crescentic blade end. The blade is blunt and the butt end is broken and worn. The iron is a dark reddish-orange colour with an uneven surface from which patches of iron oxidation products (rust) have flaked away. The wedge is 69.9mm long, 44.2mm to 29.1mm wide, 14.8mm thick and weighs 137g. Similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database including SUSS-1A6F82 and LVPL-4B16A7. Copper alloy wedge. Cast slightly tapering wedge with a round suspension loop at its thicker end with a drilled aperture of diameter 2.7mm, and cracked across its narrow end, which is worn with a curved edge. The regularity of the object is striking and indicates a relatively recent date; its function remains uncertain. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. A corroded iron wedge of uncertain date(probably medieval to post-Medieval). The head of the wedge has a flattish top and is irregular in plan. A wide transverse groove, located immediately below the head, marks the start of the body. This body has a rectangular cross section, parallel upper sides and tapers in its lower half, both in terms of width and thickness, terminating in the blade. The implement is 13.07mm thick at the top and decreases to 5.5mm near the blade.

Iron wedge, as kindly identified by Kevin Leahy. A wrought iron bar, tapering to a narrow end, and with only slight traces of burring at its head or wear at the 'blade'. If used to split timber, this object was lost before the repeated impact of a heavy hammer had begun to spread the wider struck surface, as might be expected with prolonged use. A cast copper alloy tool, possibly a wedge or punch, of unknown date, possibly Roman or Medieval. The artefact is formed from a sub-rectangular bar, one end has been hammered to form a wedge, and this part is distorted. The worked edge has not been sharpened. There is no decoration present. The worked edge measures 15mm in width and is 4mm thick. The opposite end is rectangular in cross-section and is worn. It measures 11mm in width and is 7.5mm thick. The artefact is formed from a sub-rectangular bar, one end has been hammered to form a wedge, and this part is distorted. The worked edge has not been sharpened. A very corroded wedge of iron of unknown date with flat sides, tapering from 27.4mm thickness at the head end down to 5.5mm at the opposite end. The wedge is trapezoidal in plan and triangular in cross section. The head flares out from the main body slightly and is flattened suggesting it has been repeatedly struck. The iron is badly corroded and large areas are flaking off. It has been coated with varnish in the past to prevent further corrosion. It was probably used as a log/plank splitter and is likely to be of Post Medieval date (c. 1500 - 1800 AD).
