A possible fragment of a copper alloy beaded torc, dating from the late Iron Age to early Roman period, c. 50 BC- AD 100. The fragment consists of two rounded sections, between these is an indented collar flanked by two incised collars. At the other side of the rounded sections is another incised collar. At one end there is a worn break with a triangular sharp projection. The opposite end is possibly the attachment, with three projections, two of these have a circular perforation in the lower part. The fragment is possibly hollow, but still has soil contained within it. The fragme…

An incomplete copper-alloy hinged beaded torc of Late Hallstatt - Late Iron Age date, about 650-100 BC. The remaining bracelet comprises two conjoined globular knops with grooves between them. In additoin, there is a moulded partial knob at each end, cast in one with the rest. The section of bracelet is curved with the moulded face on the outside of the curve, and a flat inner face. One of the terminal knops has a circular sectioned tapering projection - or tenon - extending from the end. This would have secured this end of the torc to a mortice hole at the end of the mi…

Description: Piece of gold rod, probably a small fragment of a flange-twisted or bar-twisted torc with three flanges, now bent into a spiral of two full turns. One end is original, with a rounded tip and neat triangular cross-section. From the rounded tip, the terminal flares slightly for c. 10mm and runs straight, before starting to coil. As it starts to curve, each face becomes concave so that the cross-section is Y-shaped, and the rod is then neatly twisted as well as bent into a coil. After two full turns the rod is apparently cut or broken. It is…

A fragment of a flange- or bar-twisted gold torc, 39.7mm in length, dating to the Middle Bronze Age (probably Penard phase) c. 1300 - 1100 BC. The torc has a x-shaped cross-section with four flanges twisted into a spiral with a circular cross-section of 6.6mm diameter. Both ends of the fragment are abraded and one appears to have been crushed. It is unclear whether the fragment has broken off from or been cut from the original torc.

An incomplete copper-alloy probable cruciform bead from a beaded torc of Iron Age date, about 50 BC – AD 150. It is flat, thick and is a quatrefoil in plan. There is a central, rectangular perforation for it to be threaded onto the iron rod. The four lobes are moulded on both faces, so they are thicker at the edges. The resulting hollows extend over the edge and are angled giving a spiral effect. It is worn. It is 16.6mm long, 16.6mm wide and 5mm thick. It weighs 5.6g. Compare GLO-EEB7E3, SWYOR-6F2F5E and YORYM-B9EC9D. See al…

Copper alloy torc fragment. A short cast fragment from a knobbed ring, with four distinct swellings on its display side, plain and smooth behind. Broken raggedly at either end and subsequently fiercely abraded. Knobbed bracelets appear to be a later Iron Age object type whose use continued, at least in East Yorkshire where furnished burial was practiced, into Early Roman times; the original overall diameter to be inferred from this small fragment would exceed that of an arm ring or bangle. Suggested date: Late Iron Ageto Early Roman, 100BC-AD100. Length: 34.6mm, Diameter/Width: 12mm, …

A fragment from a Bronze Age copper-alloy spiral twisted torc. The fragment is formed from a sub-square cross-sectioned bar that has been twisted into a spiral along its length. It is bent into a slight arc and there is a clean, cut break across each end. It survives in fairly good condition with patches of corrosion in places on the surface and no obvious signs of wear. This spiral-twisted style of torc is a feature of the late middle Bronze Age 'ornament horizon', which is now placed in the Taunton and Penard metalwork phases c. 1400-1150 cal BC, with a partic…

A fragment of Middle Bronze Age (probably Penard phase, c. 1300 - 1100 BC) flange- or bar-twisted gold torc. The fragment is straight with breaks at either end. The torc has a x-shaped cross-section with four flanges, although they twist in such a way as to give a circular cross-section around the flanges. The breaks are quite sharp, suggesting they could be quite recent. The bend is not quite at the centre of the object.

A complete, albeit warped, Middle Bronze Age cast copper alloy spiral-twisted torc dating to the ornament horizon (1400-1250 cal BC). The torc is made of a copper alloy bar that has been bent into a U-shape in profile, the terminals then bent outwards at c.45 and 40 degrees. When in use it would have originally been bent into a more sub-circular shape. The bar is made up of a four flange twisted bar placed between two plain pointed terminals. Both the torc’s terminals survive intact as 40.5mm long plain, circular cross sectioned rods that narrow down their lengths from 6.2mm i…

The find consists of a single Iron Age twisted multi-strand style torc with ring terminals similar to others found in Norfolk over the last 60 years.  The torc has an internal diameter of approximately 20 cm.  It is made of predominantly gold and silver. It is made from four strands of wires twisted around each other two and a half times. Each of the 4 strands is made from 6 wires (c. 3 mm thick).  The strands are alternately twisted one clockwise and the next counter clockwise.  The strands were cast on to the terminals.  Evidence for this is clearly visible …
