A complete cast copper-alloy terminal of possible Late Medieval to early post-Medieval date (c. 1400-c. 1600). The terminal is in the form of a standing and facing human figure on a circular plinth. Beneath the plinth there is an integral spike, circular in cross-section, which is bent at an angle of 90º to the plane of the mount. This terminal is largely corroded and has traces of a mid-green patina. 23.8 x 7.7 x 6.4mm. Weight: 2.92g.

An Iron Age – Roman (probably) copper alloy two-headed animal terminal. The object has a hollow circular shaft and a zoomorphic terminal of two addorsed (back-to-back) animal heads. The circular shaft flattens and there is a circular hole at the junction between the shaft and the animal heads. Each animal head has been moulded in the round with eyes on the top of the head, an open snout with projecting tongue and ring and dot on each side of the head. The style of the animal heads are very similar to the horse’s head as featured on the harness fitting LON-C12241. However t…

Treasure case: 2005 T396 A Silver Terminal (?) Silver cast terminal (?), hollow with cable ornament scrolling up from lower opening and round into two projecting spirals, with a boss at the centre of each. Length: 2 cm. Weight 10.7g Analysis shows the object comprises an alloy with a silver content of 95-97% and copper content of 3-5%, with traces of lead and gold present. The object has been examined by five curators responsible for collections ranging from Romano-British to Post-medieval, and all have failed to identify this object. Therefore, given the undiagnosti…

A medieval copper alloy terminal, c. 1350-1450. This terminal is in the form of an animal’s head, probably a dog. The terminal is hollow and of a rectangular section with a perforation through the ‘muzzle’ and broken attachment loops at the ‘neck’ end. The head has prominent nose, eyes and ears. One possibility is that this is part of a strap-end from a book fastener (it seems too substantial to have been worn as part of a belt). The hinge (represented by the broken attachment loops) would have been connected to a double-sided plate to which a leather strap was riveted. …

Copper alloy terminal in the form of a standing figure. This crude figure has been made in three dimensions to represent a standing, draped figure, presumably of a Roman-like female. The figure is shown fully draped with the left arm down the side of the body and the right arm raised to the face. The right hand clearly has a finger raised to the face and seems to be picking its nose. The face is rudimentary and only the raised nose and incised eyes are visible. The hairstyle is crudely and plainly moulded to show a roll of hair around the head with a bun. The figure has broken away fro…

A copper alloy terminal decorated with inlaid enamel around a copper alloy petal design. The terminal is shaped like an hour-glass - expanded ends and narrowed in the middle. There is a groove just below both the front and the reverse surfaces. The front surface (diameter: 25.10mm) is decorated with four oval petal shapes (in copper alloy); each of those has a border of punched dots. The 'petals' are surrounded by red enamel. The reverse surface (diameter: 20.99mm) of the terminal is hollowed with a slight raised boss in the centre. On the boss is a lump of iron ?the remains of …

Copper alloy terminal in the form of an acorn. This terminal is circular in plan and semicircular in section i.e. it is domed. It takes the form of an acorn with a pointed knop at its top and with a small collar around the bottom which represents the acorn cup. Beyond this moulding, there does not appear to be any form of decoration to render the acorn realistic. Extending from the bottom of the acorn is the beginning of a shaft that is circular in section and gently bent, seemingly on purpose. It is truncated and extends for no more than 6.5mm. The terminal is abraded, with the origin…

Copper alloy terminal in the shape of a bull's head. The head is three dimensional. The snout is rounded, with two dots as nostrils and a deep groove as the open mouth. The eyes may have been represented by dots, although this is not clear. The left eye looks like it might have been inlaid and perhaps have a ring around it, although this is not clear due to corrosion. The right eye is obscured by corrosion, (possibly different corrosion to the rest of the object - perhaps backing up the theory that the eyes may have been inlaid). The horns (or ears) are splayed, pointed and slightly dr…

Copper alloy terminal. This terminal takes the form of a globular head, with a short wasted neck, beneath which is an integrally moulded collar. Beneath the collar is the beginning of an integral, recessed shaft that is hexagonal in section. The object is abraded with a light green patina. There are small traces of gilt surviving. The broken end of the shaft is worn smooth, suggesting damage occurred in antiquity. The terminal is 20mm long, 8.06mm wide across the globular head and weighs 3.61g. The object is probably medieval to post medieval in date.

Copper alloy terminal. This terminal takes the form of a three dimensional acorn. It is circular in plan and sub oval in section. The acorn is moulded in one piece with its cup and the nut with a central, conical knob. The surface is heavily abraded, but does not appear decorated. The underneath of the acorn is flattened. There is a circular ‘scar’ on the bottom, presumably where the acorn was attached to the body of another object. The scar is worn, suggesting damage occurred in antiquity. The object is 21.06mm long, 11.88mm wide and weighs 9.32g. Acorns are a popular motif. This …

Copper alloy terminal from a Roman object. This terminal has a faceted cuboid head, with the lozenge shaped faces being plain. It is 10.72mm high and 10.12mm wide. From the head extends a purposely curved shaft that is circular in section. This is broken 12.8mm along its length, with the break being worn smooth suggesting it occurred in antiquity. The object weighs 6.43g. The patina of the object is an even dark green. The heavy and robust nature of this object, and the purposely curved shaft suggests against this being a pin head that has become bent. Though this is clearly a terminal…

Copper alloy terminal, probably Roman in date. This terminal is a circular shaft measuring 32.54mm long, 6mm wide and weighing 6.85g. It is moulded in one piece so that it has a barrel shaped head, 6.24mm long, below which the shaft indents before a moulded collar. The shaft then wastes slightly for approximately 4mm, this section being ended by a grooved line around the circumference of the object. Below this point the shaft flares out and then gently tapers for 13mm to another circumfral line, this time raised. 5mm below this line is another raised line, with the shaft in between the…

It is 26.8mm long, 10.24mm wide, 30.84mm high and weighs 23.66g.The body, which is 12.6mm of the total length, and legs, which are 9.5mm long, are simple subrectangles, with no attempt at realism. The body is slightly wasted towards the centre as if something was meant to fit around it. The lion’s head is subcircular with a slight crest. It has a width of 11.78mm and a length of approximately 14mm. It has roughly moulded ears either side, two forward facing indentations for eyes and…
