Incomplete cast copper alloy bar with tang, the other end having been taken off with a cold chisel as there is a chisel mark along the upper surface of the bar. The bar was swaged into this chamfered shape by using a hammer to shape it into a metal swage block. There is evidence of this from the pressure lines running along the centre of the upper surface, from the tang to the break. There are also lines where on the sides where the tang meets the 'shoulder' of the bar.
Most likely 18th century rather than 19th as after the Industrial Revolution, iron would have been forged instead …
