Copper alloy and leather strap, with fitting. A cylindrical copper alloy rivet of shank diameter 5.8mm and length 10.7mm with a flat round head of diameter 12.5mm, passing through a doubled thickness of leather of thickness 3.6mm [i.e. 7.2mm in total] and secured by a circular rove of diameter 14.1mm. Presumably from horse gear. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900 Length (as found): 30mm, Width: 25.5mm, Weight: 8.11gms

Iron strap. A fragment of a wrought iron object with one straight long side, the other long side having a gentle curve. The strap is slightly [by c.5mm] thicker at one end, which bears a drilled hole, possibly a fixing point. The other end is lightly curved. Probably building ironwork from an indeterminate setting. The good survival of the metal, inferred from its mass and good surface condition, could point to a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1900 Length: 138mm, Width: 43.5mm, Thickness: 12.2mm, Weight: c.230gms

Iron possible strap. Wrought iron strap with an oval end, and with sides tapered to achieve an elongated leaf or lanceleote form. A stout rivet or bolt of shank diameter c.9mm and head diameter c.30mm across [as expanded by corrosion] appears to have attached this object to its setting. Probably building ironwork set into wood, and its poor condition perhaps exacerbated by burning. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Length: 105.5mm, Width: 29mm, Thickness (clear of bolt): 9mm, Weight: 87.81gms

A probably late medieval/early post-medieval (c. AD1400-1600) incomplete leather strap, with 2 lead alloy sexfoil mounts still in situ. One end of the leather is broken and missing, therefore the original length of the strap and its terminals is unknown. At the front, each mount has three domed circular lobes, decorated with raised cross-hatching or 'brambling', alternate with three circular hollow lobes, and a central 3mm diameter piercing. The mounts are connected to the leather strap at 42mm centres by an integral tube fixed in place by stamping. It is likely the mounts functioned …

Leather and copper alloy strap fragment. A thick (5.4mm) fragment of leather retaining two cast rivets and the hole where a third has been lost. The rivets probably joined this object to another, to judge from the protrusion of the rivets on the back of the object. Each rivet is cast, with a round section shank of diameter 5.5mm and length 14mm, and with a flat round head on the display face and a separate circular rove on the back. Presumably from horse harness. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Length: 51.8mm, Width: 34.1mm, Thickness (overall): 14.4mm, Weight: 16.17gms.

Leather and copper alloy strap. Rectangular strap of thickness 3.2mm with a dense and overlapping series of rectangular copper alloy sheet metal stiffening mounts (each of length 18mm, width: 9.5mm and thickness c.0.5mm) fixed to its entire remaining length. Each individual mount was rectangular, of concavo-convex form with an oval-ended lug projecting from both its long sides. The lugs were driven through the strap and folded and hammered from its back. This is probably from horse harness. The good survival of leather must argue for a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medi…

A fragment of a Medieval to Post Medieval leather strap with copper alloy stud and corroded iron plate. The fragment is formed of two leather strips, which are held together by a copper alloy stud and mount, with the remants of an iron plate between them. It appears that the strap was once longer and had more studs but that these have been broken away by an old break. A similar example can be seen on the databases: KENT-1C6095. The fragment is 66.1mm long, 28.3mm wide and is 14.4mm thick. The stud is 12.9mm in diameter. Together, they weigh 17.5g.

A Medieval leather strap with copper alloy buckle, probably dating to the early 15th century. The strap is likely part of a harness. The leather consists of a single thick strip with stitching running parallel to each edge. There is a slit running through the middle (3.02 mm wide and 11.16 mm long) through which the pin from the buckle protrudes. The leather is a very dark brown colour. The buckle is copper alloy and the pin is made of Iron, evidenced by orange discolouration and the fact that it is magnetic. The pin has been wrapped around the crossbar to form a hinge. The buckle …

A fragment of copper alloy possible strap, possibly from a bracelet. The object is decorated with two incised lines running along the top and bottom edge. Vertically between these run three double rows of punched dots, joined with diagonal lines to resemble ropework and stopping at the border lines. In between the vertical lines are four crescents, two facing up and two facing down, each with a dot at the ends of the curve then two further dots separating the crescents. The object has been deliberately cut through the middle of the ropework pattern, both ends, not quite perpendicular …
