Copper alloy point. A thin cast D-section pin which tapers to a blunt point at either end, bent near either end and also at its mid-point. This might have served as an awl though lacks the robusticity to be expected of a piercing tool. Though perhaps better for use with fabric, the object also lacks an eye to enable use as a needle. Suggested date: probably Medieval, 1200-1500 Length (as found): 50.2mm, Width: 2.9mm, Thickness: 1.7mm, Weight: 2.68gms

Blue-grey flint point. A sub-triangular flake with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge for two thirds of its extent. The point is very fresh and perhaps unused when the object was deposited. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC Length: 36.7mm, Width: 14.6mm, Thickness: 6.1mm, Weight: 2.98gms

Pale grey and banded flint possible point. A trapezoid chunk with pointed end with a positive hinge fracture conferring a smooth surface to the longest edge which terminates in a sharp point. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a short angled edge extending from the point. The ventral surface is flat, though a bulbar surface on the side opposite the hinge fracture is also smooth and with an adjacent hollow affords a thumb rest. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 32.2mm, Width: 18.6mm, Thickness: 10.9mm, Weight: 6.25gms

Dark grey flint possibly collected from the East Coast, possible point. A thick dentiform chunk bears a concave scar on its dorsal side, and ripples arising from the same impact on its ventral surface. A powdery ?marine-deposited patina? was removed by this draft, and also by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect which follows a sub-triangular projecting point. The appearance of retouch along a long edge may be misleading, as most of the scars appear to result from edge-on impacts. The fresh condition of the flint is also much as would be found today on East Coast beache…

A pointed teardrop shaped utensil made of horn or antler, 51.8mm in length. The object has a plano-convex section, with a rounded wide end and a flat tapering pointed end. Probably a "point turner" used to create seams or sharp creases in sewing or garment manufacture and of post medieval to modern date.

Soft hammer tertiary struck flake: - of pale grey mottled flint, now patchily patinated white with spotty iron stains, all thin edges are finely damaged and recently chipped to some degree but the notch to one side of the diffuse bulb of percussion seems deliberate, perhaps for hafting in the fashion of a projectile point, though this is far from certain. If so, it may represent an Upper Palaeolithic shouldered point, though it is modelled on a flake rather than a blade and it lacks the steep retouch to one edge (the “backed” edge) of the classic types, The profile “snakes” fr…

Probable Levallois point, hard hammer struck with a prominent bulb of percussion, the platform appears to be without faceted preparation before striking from the core, small area of cortex extant to one lateral edge: - of mottled grey coarse flint, now thinly patinated orange/brown. Small areas of very recent damage, probably due to extraction, transportation and deposition within the sandscaping material on the beach, combined with the action of the sea after being dislodged from these sea defences. Middle Palaeolithic, circa 250,000 BC.

Grey flint with cortex spot, point. A sub-triangular flake with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb and tiny platform at the broader end of the ventral surface. A milky patina suggesting subsequent exposure to a calcareous environment is lost on one side of the point, perhaps from an episode of casual reuse. Grey flint point. Triangular end fragment from a triangular or lozenge-shaped point of lentoid section, bearing covering angled scalar retouch across both sides. The finder kindly suggests this to be an arrowhead, and objects of this form are presented as such in North Lincolnshire Museum. However, both this and those other examples may rather relate to a species of later Neolithic point recorded in the early round barrows of East Yorkshire, whose quality might suggest a function as prestigious flint-workers’ trial or show pieces rather than projectile points – they tend to bear …

Grey flint point. A thin sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface with a small bulb at one corner. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight edge, perhaps to form a cutting edge. White patina then developed over all struck surfaces, to be interrupted by a limited zone of short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect which follows that edge opposite the earlier putative cutting edge. Grey flint with re-formed cortex, point. A triangular point with angled scalar retouch across its dorsal side and with a lightly rippled ventral surface. White misty patina has formed across struck surfaces, suggesting a subsequent period of exposure to a calcareous environment. One corner was broken in antiquity as patina spreads across the break. Large mammal limb bone implement handle. One end of a limb bone, roughly halved, knife-trimmed, polished and rounded at the articular surface at one end, and knife-trimmed to a tapered point at the other. Diagonal knife marks and chatter marks appear on flattened longitudinal zones near the broken long edges, and also in groups on facets around the tapered point. A drilled hole of diameter 3.7mm appears at the apex of the point, and may have served as a socket for a point or blade. Overall the impression is of a tool handle made from butchery waste which has been casually shaped and s…
