Oyster shell. The bottom half of an edible oyster shell. A seafood diet was introduced or expanded under Roman rule, when British oysters acquired an empire-wide reputation. Oysters remained as a common foodstuff into the early post-medieval period, their availability probably only declining with environmental degradation in industrial times – though Viking Age York contrived to pollute its waterways to an extent which altered the local faunal range significantly. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 70.5mm, Weight (with adherent soil): 33.69gms

Grey oyster shell fragment. A small chip from the bottom half of a bivalve oyster. Oysters were introduced to the British diet by the Romans and remained a popular food, especially for the poor or abstinent, until post-medieval times. The cachet of oysters as a luxury food is of relatively recent origin. If not archaeological, this fragment may be an ancient fossil fragment of Geological date – a possible inference from its grey tint and hardness. Suggested date: Unknown, possibly Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 28.7mm, Weight: 3.06gms

Oyster shell. A fragment representing most of the lower shell of a bivalve oyster. Probably food waste, oysters were a common food where available from Roman times onwards, and throughout the medieval period. Their post-medieval currency was still as a food of the poor, and their status as a luxury foodstuff is of relatively recent origin. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 49mm, Weight: 10.40gms

A piece of shell, possible oyster shell of unknown date.  Objects dating from the Late Iron Age to Modern period were deposited with this find from the same field therefore the other associated finds do not help narrow down the date. The shell is evidence of food waste and diet. Shell is difficult to date, therefore a broad date range is offered from the Roman period to modern, circa AD 43 to 1900. The shell measures 43.4 mm in length, 36 mm in width, 9 mm in thickness and weighs 12.7 grams.

Oyster shell. Two large oyster shells: the larger a flat bottom half and the smaller a concavo-convex top half from different edible bivalves of the same species. The oyster shell sizes are larger than those encountered in medieval or post-medieval deposits, and the larger part of the accompanying pottery must suggest a Roman date, and probably the primary deposition of food waste. British oysters were an esteemed foodstuff in Roman times. Iron Age dietary preferences seem not to have included marine-derived foods; this was perhaps because of taboo rather than the difficulty of procur…

Five small fragments of oyster shell are probably to be interpreted as food debris, of Roman to Post-Medieval date. Two are from the top and three from the bottom parts of their bivalve shells. One is pierced - quite possibly fortuitously - and all are unusually small. Suggested date: Unknown, 43-1800. Weight: 18.35gms

Oyster shell. Two base and two top halves of mature oyster shells, presumably deposited as food waste. Though British oysters were famed in Roman times and were even exported to Rome, they remained a common and useful foodstuff thereafter, the supply probably only being curtailed by coastal pollution. They are most frequently reported from Roman and medieval contexts. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500. Combined Weight: 95.77gms

Oyster shell. A fragment of oyster shell from the upper half of the shell of an edible bivalve. Although historically associated with Romanised occupation, oysters were equally a foodstuff throughout the post-Roman period and until recent [later 19th-century] times, when they acquired the cachet of a luxury. Given the scarcity of Roman material reported along with this object, a Roman date is probably unlikely. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1800. Weight: 13.83gms.

A small and incomplete shell, preserving part of one valve probably from an oyster(?) shell. A seemingly deliberate oval piercing is present towards the hinge end, and this may indicate deliberate modification of or damage to the shell in antiquity. Similar examples are recorded through the PAS database (e.g. NARC-3E2BB7, NARC-3DB1A6, LEIC-4C74A4) and might indicate modification as a pendant or similar item. Precisely when this would have occurred, and if this was indeed an intended function, remains uncertain. It measures 41.89mm in surviving length, 37.88mm in width, 4.53mm in thick…
