A fragment of a Roman copper alloy penannular neck ring, bracelet or armlet, dating to cAD250 - 410. It is a curved rod, circular in section, expanding a little to a circular buffer terminal.  The other end appears to show an early break, so original length is undetermined. There is a groove immediately beneath the flat terminal, giving a cap-like appearance. Dimensions: 108.1mm in length; hoop varies from 3.6mm to 6.6mm in diameter; 15.70g in weight See GLO-827089 on the PAS database for a similar find.

Incomplete probably Early Anglo-Saxon sheet copper alloy probable neck ring or necklet, both ends broken, flat, curving and widening from one break to the other, with a row of transverse engraved dashes along both edges of the front face. On the outer edge there are single lightly punched dots between some dashes while along the inner edge, where the dashes are shorter, dots appear more consistently. The narrow end, which thickens to an oval cross-section, may have terminated in a hook. Both faces are polished, but some areas are obscured by corrosion products, especially on …

Bent fragment of a possible necklet of copper alloy sheet and of uncertain date. Both ends are broken. Both sides curve and the width increases from one end to the other. Engraved decoration on one face comprises a rather untidy zig-zag. Some short longitudinal grooves on the other face may be decorative but are more likely the result of damage. Two quite similar fragments from Barton Bendish, Norfolk, were identified as ? Late Bronze Age (Gurney 2005, 737-8, fig. 1). Another necklet later recovered from the same field is convincingly Roman (NMS-1C7B25). A fourth example, from West Ac…

A silver neck-ring in two pieces, each of which is bent back on itself. The majority of the ring is in the form of a flat bar, hammered from a single piece of metal, tapering to round-sectioned rod at either end, terminating in a loop at one end and a hook at the other. The outer side of the bar (visible when worn) is decorated with three pairs of pellets slightly raised, pressed through from behind. There are incised vertical lines to either side of each pair of pellets, and an X and two vertical lines at each end of the bar section, with a repeated pattern of elongated vertical S sh…

Fragment of a Roman copper alloy possible neck ring, a curving strap decorated throughout the length of both faces with a row of closely spaced, punched ring-and-dots. One end is broken while on the other there is a pierced terminal set a right angles and decorated on the front with two ring-and-dots. The aperture, probably an eye to accommodate a hook, is rectangular, 5 x 3mm. The inner face is a continuous curve from strip onto the terminal. Less than one quarter survives. Approximate diameter 110mm. Width 6.5mm. Thickness 0.7mm at the break, 2mm before the loop. 3rd - 4th century. …

Fragment of a probably Roman copper alloy penannular neck ring: a flat rectangular sectioned bar curving and widening from a (recent) break to a simple straight terminal. After a short plain length from the break engraved edge-to-edge decoration consists of a saltire flanked by straight lines, then a series of zig-zags and finally four straight lines before the terminal. That one face was left undecorated suggests that it was not to be seen, and that the object lay flat with the ornamented face outwards. Such an arrangement shows that this cannot have been a bracelet. Little more than…

Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the fragment of 94-98%, the remainder being copper with small amounts of lead and gold. The fragment has been cut from the terminal of a neckring of apparently twelve plaited silver wires and is in the form of a thick strip, expanding to one end where the ends of the wires have been hammered-welded together and later damaged by partial melting; two testing nicks on opposite edges. One face is plain and the other is decorated with three rows of closely punched apex-to-apex triangles, w…

Part of a Romano-British possible penannular neck ring, rectangular section, narrow end broken (2 x 1.5mm), other end a straight terminal (4.5 x 3mm). Decoration occurs towards the terminal on one broad face and on the two narrow faces, which forms the inner and outer edges of the curve. Starting from the terminal decoration consists of: five moulded beads and reels on the faces, engraved herringbone on the front broad and oblique lines on the outer narrow face, pair of transverse lines on front and outer face, ring and dot on front. That one broad face was left undecorated suggests t…
