A fragment of copper alloy mirror. The handle of a mirror which has been broken into two pieces. The handle comprises two loops separated by oval transverse collars and a bi-lobed involute looped slotted mount where the missing plate of the mirror was attached. The lower, terminal loop is sub-circular and the central loop is oval. They are separated by an oval collar. The frame is circular in cross section. At the top of the oval loop is a second oval collar separating it from the bi-lobed involute looped terminal. The loops of the terminal are open and have a lozengifor…

A fragment of a copper-alloy and tin (speculum) mirror (Llyoyd-Morgan Group K) of Roman date (c.43-410). Description: The object remains as a sub-rectangular fragment of the edge of the circular mirror. One side is flat, while the other curves towards the edge. The curved rim has six whole and two half circular drilled holes running in a line, bordering the edge. The holes are countersunk so that in cross-section they appear as two truncated cones which join at the apex. The holes on the reverse have wider openings than on the reflective side. Beneath this bor…

A incomplete Late Iron Age to Roman copper-alloy mirror dating to circa 150 BC-AD 100. The extant element consists of the handle. The upper element bifurcates into two arms which would held the held the mirror in a slot at the apex. Faint traces of the mirror are contained within the slot. The arms terminate in old, worn breaks. Below is positioned a transverse raised collar which gives way to a circular-sectioned oval loop. Siutated beneath is a rectangular sectioned base. The piece is now heavily abraded with a dark green patina. A similar example is recorde…

An incomplete cast copper alloy looped fragment, potentially of later Iron Age or very early Roman date (c. 150 BC - 100 AD), possibly a tankard or mirror handle. The fragment has a rounded loop at one end and a bifurcation at the other, which ends in an old break. Both sides have grooves up the midline, which give the impression of the object as a single strand, bent into shape. There is no evidence of any attachment points or fixings for other components. Probably an incomplete Roman copper-alloy mirror handle. This artefact weighs 22.45g, has an incomplete length of 70.1mm, maximum width of 44.4mm and maximum thickness of 6.0mm. The surface of this fragment has a dark brownish-grey patina with small patches of green copper corrosion showing through. The handle shaft has an abraded irregular break at the distal end. This shaft has a subtle hexagonal shaped cross-section that more readily appears, at quick glance, to be oval. At the break the shaft has a width of 5.8mm x thickness 4.9mm. The shaft then expands slightly to width 6.8…

Polygonal shaped copper alloy fragment of a flat plate (36mm x 33mm), possibly part of a Roman mirror. Only one original surface remains, which is that of an outside curve, bordered with three complete and one partially complete ring and dot motifs, on the inside of which is a twin shallow grooved decoration that follows the line of the outer curve. The reverse has a twin-grooved border set slightly further apart than its counterpart and without ring and dot. The curvature of the decoration and outer curve if taken to the full circle suggests an object of around 200mm diameter. The br…

Possible fragment of Roman copper-alloy mirror. It is a dark colour with a high polish on both faces. One face is slightly pitted by corrosion, and the other has faint traces on concentric rings, probably polishing marks. Both faces are absolutely flat, and the thickness is extremely consistent over the fragment, between 1.3 and 1.4mm. The fragment is approximately sub-rectangular, but no edge is certainly original. It measures approximately 21mm x 14mm and weighs 2.96g. Compare SF-518E1E, SF-76FD9B, etc.

An unidentified object of probable Post Medieval date, about AD 1500 - 1900, possibly a speculum mirror. It is a plain copper alloy disc, covered with a very smooth silver or white metal coating. There is no visible design or decoration. It has a rounded edge and faint scratches on both faces. It is similar to the size of a Victorian Florin coin, but is unlike a coin because one face is flat and the other is convex. There is no evidence of attachment or damage, so does not appear to be a button. It is 27mm diameter, 2mm thick and 7.2g. It is possible that the object is a mirror; th…
