A perforated stone which is probably a geological phenomenon rather than an archaeological one. It is a fine grained grey stone with sparse mica inclusions and occasional pockets of a dark grey soft and powdery material. The stone is oval in plan, with smooth and fairly flat faces and slightly rounded sides. It is water worn. In the centre is a sub-circular irregular hole right through the cobble. The hole has not been drilled - it is not circular, and the inside wall has vertical striations and ridges. These do not give a magnetic response despite some orange staining. The uneven insi…

A piece of white and grey banded sedimentary stone of unknown date, recorded because it is exotic to the area. It is soft and fine grained, chalky in feel, with a laminated structure. The edges are weathered, revealing the strata. It has formed a triangular shape, but does not appear to have been intentionally worked. It is 99.7mm long, 23.4mm wide and 16.2mm thick. 40.3g.

A waterworn stone pebble of quartzite with distinctive natural markings in the form of dark bands across the stone at right angles. The pebble is natural, but exotic to the location where it was found. It was probably brought to the site by human activity. The rounded stone is a yellow grey colour. Stephen Poole (geologist) describes the dark lines as caused by fluid getting into the bedding plane lines. The stone is eyecatching and was probably intentionally selected and placed, though at what date is unknown. It was found about 30m from a bowl barrow. It is 68.6mm long, 52.5mm wide a…

A fragment of stone or lead ore (galena), probably from a lead mining operation of uncertain date, Roman to Medieval, AD 43 - 1600. It is from an area where there was Roman lead mining, but it could also have been extracted at a later date. It is hard and fine grained, dark grey in patches on the surface, and light grey in other areas. There are small angular clear quartz inclusions embedded in the matrix. The sample is 47.4mm long; 29.3mm wide and 21mm thick. It weighs 101.05g.

Two fragments probably of iron oxide, or red ochre, also known as red ruddle. There is an irregular and rounded chunk of dark red stone, broken across one edge, and a smaller irregular fragment. They are 34.3mm long, 19.9mm wide, 10.6mm thick and 7.4g, and 15.3mm long, 13.1mm wide, 7.1mm thick and 1.06g. They could be from a mesolithic site, but are impossible to date of themselves. A nearly cuboid chunk of flint of unknown date. The flint does not exhibit any conclusive evidence of human agency, but flint only rarely occurs naturally in West Yorkshire, so it is recorded here as a likely import. It could possibly be an unworked flint nodule, but is perhaps more likely to be a cobble or stone imported with gravel or rubble. It is a secondary chunk with cortex on two opposing faces, and patches of cortex on a third face. The flint is mottled yellow grey. there are no obvious striking platforms or clear deliberate shaping, nor systematic removal patterns as seen on …

A piece of stone, thought at first to be limestone, but unreactive to dilute hydrochloric acid, so now thought to be a fine grained sandstone with quartz crystals in one area. It is cream with grey speckles, and one face is pink, perhaps in reaction to heat. The texture is very fine, with some areas of crystals and some particles of mica present under magnification. It is an irregular five sided flat shape. Though one face is very smooth, and flatter than the others, there is no conclusive evidence of human working. Most of the faces are irregular and undulating. It is from an area wh…

A battered and broken piece of tan coloured flint which has a circular hole through it. This is probably natural, and created by a marine creature. The flint does not appear to have been worked. It measures: diameter 47.9mm; internal diameter 10.9mm; thickness 31.4mm; weight 73.77g. The same field has produced many fossils.

An unworked flint nodule, presumed to be the raw material for flint knapping, and thus probably dating from the Mesolithic or Neolithic, about 9000 BC - 2200 BC. It is a sub-spherical nodule or pebble with cortex on all but one area. It is 42.5mm long, 35.3mm wide and 31.2mm thick. 57g.

A piece of black jet, or jet-like material, recovered and recorded because it is not naturally occuring in the area and may be an exotic material curated by human activity. As such, it dates from the Neolithic Period onwards. Worked flints have also been recovered from the location. The jet is not obviously worked or shaped, but has natural flat facets and what appears to be a conchoidal fracture. It is roughly a pointed oval shape and triangular in cross section. It leaves a dark brown mark on paper and is not cold to the touch. It is 56.6mm long, 29mm wide and 22.7mm thick. 13.9g. C…

A chunk of what appears to be graphite, probably the soft and pure type found naturally occurring in the UK in Borrowdale, Cumbria. The object has two sides which appear deliberately shaped and undamaged. They are slightly convex and covered in fine scratches in multiple directions. The other faces are fractured and seemingly incomplete. The material is very soft, so all the corners are rounded, and it leaves a clear streak on paper. The piece is 59mm long, 35mm wide and weighs 46.51g. It is unclear whether this fragment is natural or shaped. Borrowdale graphite (historically known…

A piece of soft but well bedded limestone, apparently natural, but recorded because it is an "exotic" stone, not naturally occuring in the findspot area. It is sub-rectangular in plan and section. The edges are soft and rounded and there are some areas of pitting where there are small holes, probably caused by softer elements in the stone disolving. It has been suggested to be a hammerstone, but doubts have been cast on whether the stone is hard or strong enough for this purpose. Its prescence in the area may be related to the building of the nearby reservoir. It is 98mm long, 31.6mm …
