An iron hammer of a large flintlock pistol, possibly a Brown Bess lock (Noel Hulme, 1969, fig. 214, fig. 69, no. 5). The jaws would have connected together and to the hammer by a vertical bar running down one side. The screw would have run vertically through the jaws adjacent to the side fixed by the vertical bar and would have tightened to hold the flint in place. The flint is missing but would have projected beyond the open side of the baws - opposite the vertical bar and screw. The mechanism is showing signs of active corrosion. The length is 125mm, the width is 78mm and the weight…

A lead fragment that is possibly a component part of a flintlock or a binder probably for a knapped gun-flint from a flintlock musket of post-medieval to modern date. The flintlock was introduced in the middle of the 16th century and became the main regulation firearm for the British Army during the reign of William III. The knapped flint was used within the musket mechanism to produce a spark and could last between 20-25 shots before it had to be replaced. Shares similarities with LANCUM-CF18B7, WAW-679807, SUSS-EC86A4 and HAMP-F19E84 although they are not patinated. The length…

A Post Medieval iron flintlock musket hammer cover, dating to the 18th century. The piece is constructed of a circular plate and a curved plate that has a lip where it would attach to the second hammer piece on the other side. This object would have fitted over the hammer arm of a flintlock musket. There is a hole on the top of the circular plate that would have secured the object to the musket. There is a decoration on the outer faces of the plate. The curved plate has an unknown linear decoration and the circular plate appears to depict a coat of arms, with only a helm and ostrich f…

This flint has been worked to be used as a musket gun flint. Although this piece was not finished, the long, parallel edges and the squared surface, on the dorsal surface of the flint (which has been created through knapping) suggest that further working would have knapped the flint into chamfered squared gun flints. The reverse of the flint (the ventra surface) still has a bulb of percussion, showing where the flint was originally stroke off the core. Reworking has been carried out along the edges, but this work again has not been finished. At first glance the flint appears to be of M…
