An incomplete, cast copper alloy cross pendant, probably dating from the Modern period, about AD 1850 - 1980. It is cross shaped, with an second shorter cross bar at the top, and a wider area at the base, which is incomplete. The metal is thin and the front is moulded but grainy, making the decoration difficult to interpret. There is a central cross and a ring of pellets. It is possible that a separate Christ figurine was once attached here. The top bears a square panel, with a row of pellets on each side of it. It may contain lettering. There is an incomplete square panel at each…

Medieval to early post-medieval lead pendant, probably once in a shape approximating a cross, but now squashed and distorted. Three of the arms are of approximately equal length. The fourth, which is perforated for suspension, is shorter and more of a bulge than an arm. These objects are usually dated 12th to 16th century. Examples in better shape include NMS-B3D2E8 and YORYM-B5D268. Length (top to bottom, suspension hole at top): 24.2mm. Width: 27.3mm. Thickness: 6.4g. Weight: 12.5g

Incomplete medieval lead cross, probably a pendant, with a central perforation, three arms of roughly equal length which widen outwards but do not thicken, and one arm which is broken across a probable transverse perforation for suspension. Cf. NMS-7B1E28 in which there is both a central hole and a suspension loop. The crudity of both these Norfolk crosses is matched by six examples from Meols (Egan, G, in Griffiths et al. 2007, 157-8, pl. 28, nos. 1879-84). Weight 4.8g. Width 27mm. Thickness 4.2mm, Extant height 21.5mm. 12th - early 16th century.

An incomplete cast gilded silver cross pendant or pectoral cross dating from the early Medieval period, probably the eighth century (AD 700 - 800). The pendant is cruciform with one arm missing owing to a patinated break. There is a circular embellishment in the centre, from which the arms extend, flaring with concave sides to terminate in splayed sub-triangular ends. The outer ends of the arms are convex, and would form a circle if they were joined. Both faces of the cross are decorated. The front has chip-carved single line interlace filling each arm, contained within a re…

A lead, cast cross pendant of medieval to post-medieval date (c. 1250 - 1700 AD). The cross has arms of equal length which bulge very slightly towards the ends. The cross arms are square in section, with one arm perforated with a circular hole (diameter 4 mm). Pendant crosses may have been worn as a personal, apotropaic device, to ward off evil spirits and demons, see LANCUM-AE846D for further discussion. Other parallels include WAW-4F364D, NLM-F4C47C, NLM-18A6C8 and LIN-F65087. Length: 20 mm; Width: 23 mm; Thickness: 6 mm; Weight: 13.57 g.

Silver cross now missing its suspension ring. The obverse is marked with an outer border, within which is a repeating filigree scalloped design. There is no inscription or lettering visible on the obverse. The reverse was formerly without decoration and is now lightly scratched in places. Visible on the lower arm of the cross however are signs of the deliberate removal of what appears to have been either hallmarking or an initialling. There are no other markings on the reverse.

A copper alloy cross pendant in the shape of a Latin cross, probably with Christian symbolism, recessed on the front to hold inlaid pieces of wood. It is probably Post Medieval in date, about AD 1500 - 1900. There is a circular flat knop projecting from the top of the cross, which is pierced (not centrally) to act as a suspension loop. One piece of wood is used to inlay the upright, and two other pieces would have formed the arms, but only one survives. The wood is attached with copper alloy rivets. The lower part of the upright is broken off and missing, and only half of the wood sur…

A cast copper alloy cross pendant. The cross is of traditional proportions with expanded terminals and an integrally cast circular suspension loop, enabling the cross to hang around the neck with the inscription visible. The inscription is in two parts - down the length of the cross are the letters IC XC - the Greek for Jesus Christ, and across the arms are the letters NI KA or the word NIKA. This word is an abbreviation of the Greek form of the Latin In Hoc Signo Vinces (in Greek 'En Touke Nika'), words that, according to Christian tradition, Constantine I (AD 307-337) heard when he …

An incomplete medieval cross pendant, maybe originally a crucifix but with the body of Christ now missing. The cross is a Latin cross with a trefoil shaped terminal at the end of each arm. It is rectangular in section. The base of the lower arm is missing. There is a substantial suspension loop above the top terminal set at right angles to the plane of the cross. There are no rivets indicating where a Christ figure may have been attached, but there are areas of different patination mainly on one face which could indicate where a separate body was soldered on. These areas have a thickk…
