A complete, cast, copper alloy set of compasses/dividers of post Medieval to modern date (c. AD 1600-1900). Both arms have trapezoidal cross-sections that taper towards their pointed terminals. The opposite ends of the arms extend into a circular hinge though which a copper alloy pin passes to hold them in place. The compasses no longer move. There appears to be some form of decoration in that there seems to be two incised lines running across the external surface of both arms around half way up the arms. One of the arms is slightly shorter than the other, being around 1.3mm shorter.

An incomplete copper alloy probable mathematical instrument (architectural and drawing compass) dating to the Post Medieval to early Modern period (c. AD 1700-1900). The object consists of one sub-triangular sectioned arm with worn breaks at either end. The arm appear to be 'pinched' in two places along its shaft thus accounting for the shape of the cross-section. The object is otherwise undecorated and has a dark brown patina.  The arm bears a strong resemblance to those in PAS record WAW-3CC6DA, a more complete probable architectural a…

An incomplete copper alloy probable mathematical instrument (architectural and drawing compasses) dating to the Post Medieval to early Modern period (c. AD 1700-1900). The object consists of two sub-triangular sectioned arms joined by a circular hinge. The arms appear to be 'pinched' in the middle thus accounting for the shape of the cross-section. The upper arm has a small key retained in situ. The lower arm appears to have iron corrosion remains at the terminal end. The object is undecorated and has a dark green patina.  The object is roughly similar in form to PAS

A probable mathematical instrument (architectural and drawing compass). The piece comprises a single long jointed hinged arm which has been truncated. The hinge (which is a long joint as opposed to a sector joint) is comprised of two sub-circular/trapezoid shaped plates, fixed together by a central circular bar. Between both plates, set in a central rectangular slot, lies the truncated remains of the second hinged arm, remaining as a thin sub-rectangular plate. The sub-circular/ trapezoid plates taper to a step. The step would have been to accommodate the now missing se…

An incomplete set of copper alloy Compasses of probable Roman date (AD 43-410). The object is composed of a squared head set at 90 degrees to the integral shaft below it. The head has a large amount of orange/ brown iron corrosion adhering to the central portion which likely indicates that an iron pin was used to attach the second arm, both now missing. The shaft is rectangular in plan and section and tapers steeply to a point at the terminating end. The metal is a light green in colour with a heavily pitted and corroded patina. Similar examples can be seen on the Portable A…

Cast copper alloy incomplete compass or another similar item of equipment that had to pivot and rotate in order to measure quantities. The screw thread and circular impressions at the base of the object which act as a pivot point suggest that a movement like a compass. The bifid protrusion at right angles to this terminal would have clipped on to something else to allow it to rotate. The opposite end is open and the two halves have become separated, but there are some remains within which are likely to be wood which would have originally been screwed down within the clamp, like a penc…
