A probable copper-alloy clench nail probably dating to the medieval to post-medieval period c.AD 1150-1600. The nail has a triangular shank that tapers to a truncated point. At the head end there is a circular collar, integral to the shank. Above the collar, the nail extends into a circular concave rove, possibly secured to the shank by a rivet with a rounded head (although this may be a continuation of the shaft). The rove is broken. The underside of the rove has lines which follow the circumference. Length 26.74 mm, length of shank 20.74mm width of shank at neck11.49 mm, …

Copper alloy clench bolt. Cast shank of 6.5mm square, passing through a rectangular rove of length 26mm, width 19.1mm and thickness 2.7mm with bevelled ends. The head of the bolt is rounded and of diametr4er 11mm where it passes through the rove. The other end is burred. Though most famously associated with early medieval shipbuilding, iron clench bolts saw continuing use through the Middle Ages for shipbuilding - as, for example, with fragments of a 15th-century boat reused as waterside revetment for the Clitherow plot on Hull's High Street, now displayed at the Hull and East Riding …

Iron clench bolt. Wrought iron bolt with a diamond shaped head and a shank of indeterminate section which passes through a diamond-shaped rove - which is rove and which head is uncertain; one of these end plates is chipped. The clench bolt was used in ship-building from the 7th century to the 15th, and also for domestic purposes; clench bolts might also appear where ship timber has been reused. The context here may suggest an Early Medieval date, 850-950. Length (overall): 27.5mm, Width (rove or head): 31.8mm, Weight: 20.20gms.

Iron possible clench nail fragment. Wrought iron diamond-shaped rove with a probably rectangular-section shank running up to it. This may alternatively be a diamond-headed handmade nail used in a similar setting, but the rhomboid form more usually denotes a rove. Though associated with early boats, the clench nail was used more widely for fastening wooden structural elements. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Length (rove): 37.7mm, Width: 31.1mm, Weight: 55.30gms.
