An unfired rifle cartridge with strands of cordite remaining within, as kindly identified by Kevin Easton, correcting an initially mistaken identification by this reporter. Kevin notes the material remains inflammable and should be handled with care. Suggested date: Modern, 1914-1945. Length 41.6mm, Diameter (at base of cartridge case): 13.3mm, Weight: 11.41gms.

Copper alloy and paper Shotgun Cartridge base. Sheet metal cylinder with a flat base and a pin projecting from one side. The base bears the number 12. The pin passes through the outer casing with its end visible protruding under tightly coiled paper wadding. The pin is presumably the ignition mechanism for a 12 bore shotgun cartridge. Suggested date: Modern, 1850-1900. This object was kindly identified by C Broadhurst of the Hibaldstow History Club. Diameter: 21.6mm, Height: 9.8mm, Weight: 5.70gms.

Alluminium cartridge of German origin dated 1940. Length 82mm, diameter 27mm, Weight 64.09g. (weight includes a dark grey deposit within the cartridge). The cartridge is one of three (all similar) found in the same vicinity. The open end is dented but complete. The edge of the closed end is serrated. There is no percussion mark in the centre of the closed end of the cartridge which indicates that it has not been detonated.
