Roman hardstone pebble-back apotropaic cameo, depicting the 3/4 facing Gorgoneion head of Medusa. The cameo is white through to bluish grey in colour with polished facial features that become less well rendered going backwards towards the snake-like hair that envelops the head. The rear of the cameo is in an as-cut condition and a groove has been made around the entire periphery in order to facilitate mounting. Probably fashioned from layered nicolo onyx, a chalcedony quartz stone.
